Reviews for What We Saw From the Outside

ROASTED COCCO how did they manage to kill one!?
IdleThoughtsofanIdleSoul chapter 16 . 7/13
This whole story was just beautiful. I loved it. Loved the use of mental illnesses. Loved the use of everything. The 1 critizim I'd give is death is a weird kind of personality. If we are going with the theme you set out I'd use hilda though I'm unclear on release dates from the games and I'm not paying attention to when you wrote this either. Doesnt matter loved it keep kicking ass

...it’s past four in the morning, and I have just finished binge-reading this story. I am left with a whole storm of feelings swirling around in my mind. This story was completely unlike any fanfiction I’ve ever read, and somehow still managed to stay true to the characters. I am in awe of your writing and your storytelling. I am too overwhelmed by all the emotions to be able to express anything even remotely sensible, but know myself well enough to know that if I don’t write now it won’t get done - and you deserve to know your story is amazing and appreciated. So - to end my ramblings - thank you!

Is there going to be a sequel for this?
LateToTheParty chapter 6 . 1/3
Another angsty and very good chapter! The brother-sister drama once again really hit me hard and I felt Ariel was being really unreasonable, although I had a sense by now that I was missing an important part of the story that Link, as the narrator, hasn't revealed yet. I don't really agree that Aryll is out of character since she's in an entirely different setting and context and her age is different. I like that you chose to make her more unreasonable - it feels realistic and helps us feel the magnitude of the consequences of the accident. Grandma is really well written as usual.

Wow. Despite the somber topic, this story was a delight to read! Great work!
LateToTheParty chapter 5 . 12/30/2019
This general atmosphere at school rallies and Link's and Fledge's reactions to it are pretty much spot on for how it was for my friends and I at our school rallies. Except for the part about getting sent nasty text messages. That part was really shocking to me because I never expected Aryll to be in on it, and still didn't understand why she was so angry at Link since it was an accident (a car accident, I thought). The feeling of betrayal and fury and loneliness was conveyed really well and it was a real gut punch to me since at the time my relationship with my own brother had become very strained. It was at this point in the story that I really started feeling incredibly anxious for Link and couldn't bear to stop reading - I had to see what happened next.

Sidenote: "we'll be losing our next weekends to detention" - wait, how does detention work at this school?! Parents have to bring their kids in on the weekends, and then who supervises them? I always thought detention was just during school hours.

At the beginning of this chapter was when I realized Zelda had MPD and I got really excited that you were writing a character with this disorder because I was always curious about it and had researched it online before, but still didn't really understand it very well. Zelda helped me understand more about the disorder. Also, Link's internal dialogue when he pulls up to the house is very similar to my own whenever I show up to a party, so definitely could relate to that! I liked how the switch to Tetra was revealed - it felt really jarring and conveyed the shock Link felt (that I could empathize with) very well.

I really liked all the different personalities coming together at group therapy. They all seemed very in line with their characters in the Zelda games their names come from, and it was fun to walk down memory lane and remember who each of them is. Still stumped on Maggie though. Was she a witch in one of the games? Can't remember. I like the rapport between Zelda and Midna a lot and I remember looking forward to seeing how the party would play out when I read this the first time.

One of the best fanfictions I have ever read. I already read it three times. Your writing style is gorgeous and I really love the idea behind the story. Thank you so much for writing it!

I got excited with Madness by Muse... but PROJECT RUNWAY? Zelda has good taste.
LateToTheParty chapter 2 . 12/15/2019
So I didn't notice this on my first read through, but Link goes from getting beat up by his "friends" to thinking that they "probably" hate him in this chapter - I would have thought he would be convinced of that by now, and it's surprising that Mikau is oblivious too. Since I didn't know Link was at fault at all in the accident for a long time in this story at the beginning, I just assumed he was not at fault at all given his POV and the fact that the ones who really seemed to hate him were already bullies. But this has me wondering - what was the official story, and which students knew that the accident was a result of hazing? Did Mikau know?

Hello! While on a BOTW-related fic reading binge about a year ago, I was recommended your fic Cooking and Other Pleasures by embyr-75 and from there I read Sea Glass and The Girl at the Museum. I thoroughly enjoyed them all but for some reason did not get around to reading this fic until now. I regret waiting this long because I read it all very fast over the past couple days and I really liked it and it was especially nice to read it while I was going through a rough patch in my life. Now I'm going to go back through every chapter and review it so I can explain more specifically why I like this fic so much!

For this one, it's very interesting to go back to the first chapter and see how much Link has changed by the end from the guy he is at the beginning. It took me a while to realize that he was hiding something and I wondered why all the other characters were so hostile. I sort of automatically assumed "accident" meant "car accident."

I don’t write reviews often but I just have to.

It isn’t easy writing characters with mental illness but the respect and research you did really shows and it makes this story all the more amazing. I absolutely adored this story! I couldn’t stop reading till I reached the end! Thank you for such an amazing story

Oh my gosh, this was a beautiful story. I kept coming across it when looking at other authors' favourite stories, but I'm not normally into Zelink, so I avoided reading it. Finally, after coming across it one too many times, and because I love a good AU, I decided to read it. And I'm so glad I did!

Alright, commence rambling...

Your treatment of mental illness was sensitive and realistic, which was refreshing. I know a person irl who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder and it is so incredibly, ridiculously complex - she'd been misdiagnosed and misjudged her entire life, and only now, in her mid-life - after literal YEARS of intense therapy - has she been making real progress.

You captured all the angst and drama so well, the feelings were absolutely palpable. I'm not a crier - I'm really not, but I was close several times!

I loved all the little references to the games - names, places, artifacts, etc. My breath hitched though when the name of Zelda's abductor was mentioned though - I have an extremely unhealthy obsession with that particular person and - as deliciously evil as he is - I didn't want to associate him with quite THAT heinous of a crime! D: But I digress...

I read the entirety of this story over last night and much of today, with the album Vessel by Twenty-One Pilots running through my head. I think much of it fit. XD

Overall, while the Zelink was obviously a major underlying theme, it wasn't heavy, so I liked that. I did love that their relationship was mostly more of a close, loving friendship at first, rather than immediately romantic. It was very nicely done.

Okay, end rambling!
