Heartbreaking but so well written!
Ohyes chapter 1 . 2/6/2013
This is so perfect, and even captured the future reality of the episode that actually dealt with their estrangement. Everyone sounds so right and their marriage is portrayed with sensitivity. Could have been an episode. Really liked Carson's voice!
WhatsABriard chapter 1 . 11/2/2012
This? Stunning.

Sad, sad, sad.

But sooo lovely.

""Isn't this what you've wanted? Both of you? To see men like me brought to our knees?""

Just...I think I held my breath through the whole piece and really liked the conclusion - simply holding one another in an empty house. LOVED this.
anonymous chapter 1 . 10/21/2012
WOW. Just wow. That was so well-done, I'm obsessed with this!
And it's funny because it wasn't that far off from the real thing...
Remingtonkeys chapter 1 . 10/21/2012

Pro. Fessional. Yes?
blpaul chapter 1 . 10/20/2012
I don't think I've read something that was so spot-on. Please, write more. The scene between Robert and Cora...ugh. So good.
Scribes chapter 1 . 10/19/2012
Very clean and articulate. Plays nicely and in a grown up way with grown up characters who are having grown up problems. Gets inside their heads very well. Fun to see alternative directions for the characters and plot lines. Thx
Ieyre chapter 1 . 10/20/2012
This is brilliant and you just made me weep. Seriously.

I think this is quite possibly the best Robert Crawley fic I've ever read, especially in terms of just unpacking him. You captured every character's voice perfectly, and your understanding of all the relationships (Robert/Matthew, Robert/Mary, Mary/Matthew, Matthew/Carson and ESPECIALLY Robert/Cora) was perfect.

I loved the line about answering the door just not occurring to Robert because he's never had to answer one in his life. And how he brought the gun because it was HIS (I could never see Robert killing himself, but I could totally see Mary hyper-panicking about it.) So many lovely, rich details.

And the ending...the catharsis...I wish DA didn't have to juggle so many subplots, it would be nice to see so much focus on one character in the actual show. You did a great job illustrating Robert's self-deprecation, his aristocratic self-restraint, his feelings of personal weakness and failure...it's refreshing when he's so loathed in fandom right now, let me just say. Thank you for this.
Settees-under-siege chapter 1 . 10/19/2012
Oh my goodness! Robert gun pounding heart. I cannot believe Matthew and Tom left but to leave the gun with him had me freaking out with all sorts of possibilities. I am glad Cora's brain got a 'jump-start' of sorts when she got to the house. So well written and once again my emotions are in turmoil :')
ModernAmericanGirl chapter 1 . 10/19/2012
This is so excellent. I love it. A lot of the stories recently have focused on Cora's pain, and by proxy Robert's, but I like that this focuses on him primarily. I certainly hope this doesn't actually happen on the show, but it is very plausible.

This: "I took it because unlike most everything else in Downton Abbey, I feel it belongs to me. I couldn't take Isis on the train," is perhaps one of the most heartbreaking lines I have ever read. Robert so sad and distraught and he cannot even bring Isis along with him. That is some serious isolation.

Will you continue the story? I hope so :)
