This was incredible. I liked the intensity and the sheer feelings and truth rolling off Mako as he cares for the injured Avatar who is healing. You can feel just how much Mako cares for Korra, just by him being near her and watching every second and finally coming into a conclusion, just how much she means to him. I loved the comparison you pointed out about Korra being two people, just an average 17 year old girl with waterbending abilities, to also being the almighty Avatar, meant to save the world. It makes you wonder why Mako himself, probably held back a lot of his feeling for Korra, all this time and chose Asami, because Asami is safe, and he can protect her. With Korra, she's so unpredictable, impulsive, courageous, strong, independent, wildfire, that Korra is someone he couldn't protect, but deep down wants to. Mako has been someone who is so used to being the protector, with his brother and now Asami, he wants to be that for Korra, but probably feels incapable of doing so. But with Korra having been kidnapped by Tarrlok and her run in with Amon, something in Mako snapped, and you really displayed all his feelings in your story. He's finally accepting his own feelings for Korra and embracing them it seems. He's so glad to have her back, in one piece, alive, and this time, he's not going to let go and now will want to be with her on her battle with Amon.
