Thank you for this. Love John's POV, and the fact he KNOWS Sam loves him, even as Sam worships Dean. Love how Sam figured out the hunt, even as he almost gets himself hurt. And how Sam feels withdrawn from Dad, for screwing up. Love how much John sees Mary in Sam.

I love this sentence so much, that part about manhanding just perfectly describe Sam Dean relationship. I actually read this story some time ago and wanted to again, but couldn't remember title or anything only this part about manhanding almost word for word, (I liked so much) and found it by this.
I like this story, and even a little your John and boys(not a little more), even if I feel like their relationship is too good for canon here (I mean Sam and John) XD
Like I don't think John was the worst father ever, but I think if he was as good as he's here canon would look a little different, I'm not sure. Maybe it's cause from John point of view...

"It was a straightforward hunt. An angry spirit was tormenting a family, pushing them to the brink of abandoning their home and hometown to go anywhere else they wouldn't be attacked by something they couldn't see and ridiculed by people they could see. The only difference from our usual hunts was that Sammy was with us, with Dean and me instead of waiting in the car. And the family was a father and mother, and two small boys.
If any spirit wants to get my back up, all they have to do is threaten a child.
It'd taken us a few days of research at the library and hall of records to find out who was tormenting the family and where he was buried. Not much of a surprise, it was a previous landowner, buried on what used to be his back forty. Fortunately that specific piece of land belonged to the family in danger and with the father's firm approval, "Whatever it takes," we headed out to do our job.
Sammy was just thirteen, Dean was seventeen. Sam was having his first growth spurt but Dean still had height on him, and he was lean but filling out where Sam was just gangly, all knees, eyes and elbows. As usual, Dean walked the edge of the grave, pouring salt while I poured gasoline, and as usual, Sam walked just behind him. Watching. Taking it all in."

Aww...that was so sweet without being syrupy. Great John & Sam stories are difficult to get to seem balanced and real. John's acceptance (almost) of Sam's need to distance himself at that age rings true and is something almost every parent goes through at that time. And his affection and love for both the guys comes through without being gushing. Well done!

You know, I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. There are so many fan fiction stories that paint a bad picture of John Winchester that I ended up not liking the character. You let me see another side of him by having John do most of the talking and analyzing his sons, especially Sam. Thanks for putting another spin on John's persona. Good story.
