terrific and moving

OH!

I had read the first two chapters of this, but somehow missed this last one when you had posted it. I LOVE this. What a brilliant chapter, and what a way of giving a brief glimpse for John, something so insignificant to anyone else, but so very important to him. And, having Murray there, being the one to find it... being alert enough to notice that someone had just been there, seeing the movement out of the corner of his eye. John may have been too caught up in his emotions, but the other soldiers were more removed and therefore more able to react instinctively to something like that if they saw it.

I loved how John's friends knew him well enough to be concerned by the danger signals he was giving, and to manage to get hold of Mycroft. And I like here that Mycroft didn't know... but was able to listen to what John had to say, and was willing to take him at his word.

Beautiful ending too...
"John sighed softly, then let the tears fall."
You don't have to describe whether they were sad, relieved, happy, or anything else. Probably a whole mixture of them at once.

You have such a gift for seeing the after effects of war on our veterans. I don't usually put uncompleted stories on fav list but this one is going there. It awesome and so well done I have to.

I really enjoyed this. Nice mix of feeling, comradship and thought, with a gentle bit of humour to leven the loard. Especially ""Why didn't you tell me you've been decorated?" Sherlock asked gently. "You make me sound like the sitting room," John replied. Goes down as one of the best two liners I'ev read in this fandom
