I can't imagine his thoughts being much different than what you have here. This was very good!

I have always wondered why he let her go back in there after the last shot. It could have been a kill shot from Lockwood or one of his cronies and she would have had to face off against them. I guess it just wasn't in the script! She was angry with Castle for pulling her out of there. As much as said so when the spoke in the hospital after her surgery. Somewhere over those next three months, I guess she saw it from his view. It did it because Montgomery asked him to, but he also did it to keep her alive. To keep them alive!

I have wanted that scene flushed out since seeing it last year. Imagined what Rick was saying as her held her, wondered why he didn't run back into the hangar with Kate. Thank you for filling in the details so superbly.

Oh. Yes. It must have been agony for him. WELL written.

when I really want something good to read, when I want to just swamp myself in it, I go back to your profile and read another of yours. I just. . .keep them in reserve. To savor.

things I loved:

'because they're tearing at his heart.'

she 'must have bowed out and left the stage. His heart shatters. . .'

'and he begs with her, covers her mouth with his hand, desperate to save her, desperate for her to live.'

and oh my word, this:

'He can feel her breath, shallow and ragged against his palm, and the tears that slid under his fingers, slowly, one at a time. '

that added touch, that detail of her tears sliding under his fingers, the way that adds realism and immediacy to this scene. . .amazing.

and then the climax of this scene:

'Then her eyes meet his – wide, pleading, horrified eyes – and hope vanishes. He is vaguely aware of a voice whispering urgently, and he's shocked to realize that it's his, and that he sounds downright broken as he chants, "Shhh, Kate, it'll be okay, please, be quiet, please, I can't lose you, shh, Kate…"

They hear the first shots, seven or maybe eight shots in a row, and Beckett's body jerks against his every time, like she's the one taking the bullets. Her left hand clutches his shirt, the way a drowning man would'

Perfect.

That was so very heartbreaking, but absolutely amazing. I read it, and then my mind just keeps wandering through the events that would have followed. Just amazing.

Whoah. Let me just first say, the hangar scene is tied for one of my two favorite scene in ay tv show, ever. I've watched it over and over, but this story is the first time I'd thought that that was perhaps the hardest thing Castle has ever had to do. The emotion of that scene you captured flawlessly- I'm in awe of you. Thank you for writing this!

This was so incredibly sad! It's not even the regular Knockout fic, but it was so terribly sad! I do like this fic though, because it shows that Kate getting shot was't the only horrible thing that happened in this episode. :) Great job on a sad fic!
