This is an amazing story. I was so happy to have been able to enjoy it. You talked about cancer in a way that showes the fight just the cancer. :D

Crying.

Not choked up. Not misty-eyed.

Legitimate, fat, sticky, fragrant drops falling from my eyes, landing heavily on my lips; lips that have never kissed anyone like Esme the Brave kissed her Carmen. But the tangy taste of them gives me hope that one day I will.
A.L. Rules chapter 1 . 4/17/2011
This was absolutely wonderful. I admire your strength to tell this story, and your words were just beautiful, showing the connection between these two soul mates. It truly was a for better/for worse type moment.

Thank you so much for sharing, and good luck with the contest!

Oh wow! Wow wow wow!

I can't even begin to describe just how flippin' beautiful this was! The style in which you wrote it really allowed ME to feel what Esme was feeling.

GUH! There aren't words that can describe just how amazed I am by this story.

Bravo.

winterstale chapter 1 . 4/16/2011
Beautiful, sweetie. Just gorgeous. There is a rhythm in this piece that feels determined and brave to me, and makes them inevitable. You used details that were commonplace but also very sensual - the repetition of soft, warm, sunlight all perfect. I love that this is a moment in time that has been 25 years in the making, especially that these women are mature and what happens between them is more than sexual but that part is just as vital.

I think your use of Esme as one who needs nurture was an excellent choice. The tone registered with me as one of 'I can do this' and with Esme I think not only must she face a disease but she has to allow someone to take care of her - the canon caretaker.

My mother lost her best friend of 30 years recently to a very aggressive cancer that took a vibrant and athletic woman down lightening quick. Mom was there, nurturing and looking after her, until her last. I think this story, even beyond the contest's theme, celebrates the simple act of caring for your best friend in very realistic, everyday ways, and just how beautiful that can be.

Thank you so much for writing this and sharing with us. Best of luck to you in the contest - you brought a lovely, rare voice to the slate.

Take care,

~w
