This is a remarkable work. I suppose the two of them playing chess is common, but it also makes sense, and I liked Mello's rant, and Near's rules, and the whole concept, really. Bittersweet, I think is an apt description. Wonderful work.

...That was sad. I just wanna run in there and hug him, the poor baby. I love the idea of the Saturday morning chess matches though. This piece was perfect, in length and content. XD

That was a good fic. C; The writing allows it to be nostalgic in all the right ways - you didn't ramble incessantly in an attempt to say something profound or deep. That's pretty rare. I also love how Near thought it imperative that they didn't keep score; it shows how, though he isn't exactly the most sensitive of the lot, he is very aware of Mello's inferiority complex and what triggers it. He doesn't just nonchalantly suggest his superiority by keeping score, knowing that Mello would definitely not appreciate being taunted in that manner. Although I kind of questioned Near's motives - what if he just wanted to avoid Mello's wrath? - the end reassured me that that wasn't the case, depicting his time at the House in a positive light that needed to be extinguished and abandoned.

At any rate, I'll quit my rambling; I'm faving this _
