Shit man, I managed to not cry at all during the whole thing but that last sentence got me. ugh, all the suffering and loneliness he must have endured. It's a partial miracle he didn't go completely insane.
Great job man, very well written!

All it would take to make this a happy story would be Danny remembering that he could have tried to learn how to make portals like Dan could.

I was waiting for the sucker punch. I knew there was no way this could end well. I thought the ending might be a dream sequence or a hallucination...but nope, it was this.

Well, I wasn't expecting that little twist at the end. It brings up the point that in a century someone else had probably built a portal, but he was rather desperate not to settle in a future time but the time he had left behind. Thank you for posting!
