Reviews for Switched Realities
arandomshipper chapter 25 . 4/14/2018
I liked the concept, but there was a largish problem with the execution. Specifically, the spell used. It really, really, really matters exactly how the spell works, but it was never explained. In fact, with the way everything went down, I don't think a working explanation even exists.

Possibility One: The spell created a different reality. Everyone and everything in it is the result of the spell, created by the caster. This is VERY difficult to swallow, because it would make the spell far, far more powerful than any magic we've ever seen in the show, up to and including the Stone of Dreams...thus making Max the most powerful wizard of all time, given that he casually cast the spell unaided. Also, it would destroy the narrative weight of anything that happens, since none of the people are 'real'.

Possibility Two: The reality already existed, as part of a multiverse or something similar, and Max simply transported them there. This SHOULD be the right answer, but it probably isn't. If it was, a Justin and an Alex should've/would've already existed there, which is what I thought was the case right on up until the final chapter. I assumed that Max's spell had made the 'normal' Justin and Alex switch brains with AU Justin and Alex, which is one of two things that could explain Alex being prego when she got there. If she was in AU Alex's body, there's no problem with her being pregnant. However, if she's in her own body, that means two very, very bad things. First, Max's spell impregnated her. Gross. Second, that kid (those kids) has REAL Justin and Alex's DNA, not unrelated AU Justin and Alex's DNA, which means it's probably going to suffer from the usual problems related to being born of incest. Better all around if they mind swapped. But they didn't. AU Justin and Alex did not take their place in the 'normal' world, as we know from the final chapter.

Now, it is vaguely possible that Max obliterated AU Justin and Alex's minds completely, put 'normal' Justin and Alex's minds in their bodies, and destroyed 'normal' Justin and Alex's bodies. That would explain everything that happened perfectly, with no holes. However, that's extremely dark, and you just don't seem like that kind of author, so I'm assuming that isn't the right answer either.

What I'm left with is an inability to accept the premise, which I unfortunately had to read the entire story to discover. Again, the prompt is great. I love it. If you could've closed the plot holes in the execution, it would've been a great story.
