Great war of words between Colby & Dwayne. Thanks for writing this.

This is so wonderful that I know I won't be able to do justice to it in my review, no matter how I try. But I'll try nonetheless!

I love Colby's voice here, and the missing pieces you give us that I would so love to have seen on-screen, but more than anything I love the Dwayne Carter you show us through Colby's eyes.

"He's the best bad guy Colby knows - or maybe the worst good guy."

Both true of him, I feel. His loyalty is to Colby, not to some abstract idea of honour and duty to a government which doesn't reciprocate. Whatever else I felt about the revelations in 'The Janus List', I always felt Colby's explanation about how he felt after Afghanistan rang so very, very true. As it turns out it wasn't true for him, but perhaps for Dwayne. Or perhaps Dwayne just never really cared at all (more likely, thinking back on the timeline). But even though they turned out not to be Colby's reasons, they made rather awful sense.

As I said, I love this story. For me it works so very well on two levels: we get more insight into Colby (and I will be honest, some very, very nicely done Colby!whump, which I do enjoy *blushes*), but it also raises some quite profound questions about loyalty.

Your firm grasp on characterization for a second fandom that I adore is again uncanny, and also deliciously satisfying. I can't tell you how much I enjoy situational character contemplation (yes, I did just make up that term a second ago, but it seems fitting), and you've got it mastered in a very unique style that I can't help but be drawn to. Truly excellent work. And maybe I also just kind of love Colby a little. Or a lot.
