Dean did need his brother badly when he thought JOhn might be in deep trouble.

It's funny how Dean always knows what to say to make Sammy feel better. It's always nice to know that Sam is willing to listen. That shape shifter was a horrible impression of Dean and used his thoughts and memories for an evil purpose. And that was to make Sam believe that Dean didn't care. Somehow though i gather Sam now realizes that the monster was simply blowing smoke. Anyway, that's what i gather from this story. :)
