Reviews for Harry Potter and the Wizard of Ashenbenford
Critical Reader chapter 3 . 1/9/2019
Really enjoyed the first 2 chapters, the second half of the 3. chapter is fairly underwhelming though. Feels rushed and like the author just wanted to finish it.
Aguy.SB chapter 3 . 11/14/2018
Kind of sad... Orel brings back Harry's parents from the dead, and then they're happy for him to wander off into crazy dangerous tombs rather than reward him.
Redwing1co chapter 3 . 4/20/2017
Great combination of the two genere hope to read more

I agree with you that wands make HP wizards more versatile and faster but in no way stronger. There is nothing that a HP wizard can do and a D&D cant - especially if its designed for large scale destruction. (The Wish spell can do basically anything).

Spell time limits are mostly game based like damage, HP or saving throws and range. In the novels a simple Cloud kill spell is a city block spell while in the game rules it can barely cover a room.

And Greater teleport and Gate are superior to any HP traveling magic.
Andromedanaea chapter 3 . 3/15/2013
This is a Great fic!
And a horrible place to end it!
Using raising Hermione from the dead, followed by The reapearence of the Potters a few hours later is a game changing action. How will Riddle/the Ministry/ the muggle government/ the world react when they learn what has happened?

It also would be interesting to see what happens to over the summer to Orel. Isn't he likely to recruit some Fighter/Thief/Monk types to adventure with him? Perhaps, a Mercenary, a criminal, a terrorist, a martial artist, and a medical doctor?
Jacob Fleming chapter 1 . 12/23/2012
Ah, finally. An imaginative and unique AU fic. I've read a trilogy that is also AU and was amazing but since then, nobody has really come up with anything I've enjoyed, so I'm glad to have stumbled on this. The main character is very good and the plot is exciting.
Dracarot chapter 1 . 4/21/2012
Speaking of useful first level spells, tongues would have been a good spell for Orel to have learned, but guess that was a low priority for him. Still the ability to speak in any language would be quite handy, not to mention it is one of the spells that can be made permanent with permanency.
Judah chapter 3 . 2/28/2012
Didn't like your upgrading time turners from 12 hours into 3 months. Additionally I really didn't like being able to 'piggyback' indefinite timetravel using a single turner. I'd expect the device to overload, stranding them three and half months in the past, not what you wrote. Time travel is epic level magic and it ruins the backstory; part of what defines Potter is the loss of his parents.

I'm OK with Limited Wish as revivify, especially since the costs is a year of your life, if I remember my D&D. It's good the OC Orel has a debilitating sickness/weakness... gives him character.

My final conclusion is you ruined the plot with the time travel business. Because as soon as you introduce it, the 'why not just off riddle, pre-dark lord?' question arises and no amount of paradox hand waving is a good answer.

I liked the story up to time-travel. I understand why it stops there though; once time-travel rears it's ugly head, suddenly infinite options open up and you get writer's blocked. Both because it's hard to make something believable and because the 'quick end' is there. You could probably finish this in about 3000 words if you wanted, just exploiting time-travel as a DEM.
Gogolu chapter 3 . 12/28/2011
That's very impressive story,
Samsas2 chapter 3 . 9/28/2011
I really did enjoy reading this fan-fic and hope to see more posted soon.

I believe I am going to have to do a bit of research on Orel as I dont reconize the name but he sounds like an interesting series to read.
Dracarot chapter 2 . 7/9/2011
Just protection from evil folks. I never understood why people never made rings or amulets of this spell. It's amazingly powerful for such a low level ability.

I actually found a webpage that had downloads on spells, magic items, all aspects of D&D really. Anyway a protection from evil item was actually lacking from any of the rings and amulets mentioned. So that would mean making one would take DM approval in any D&D game, and most DMs like giving the players a hard time. So that's why. However as the technical "DM" of this universe you have free reign.
