I like this take on the Avatar Katara AU. I am curious as to where Iroh is at the moment. Exile? Is Zuko with him? What about Lu Ten?

It sounds to me like Hakoda knew this day was coming. Kya too, it would seem. They were probably both fully prepared to die defending Katara, which is why Hakoda is so easily able to shift immediately into damage control. Being prepared for tragedy helps one to set grief aside until everything is relatively calm again.
