Exactly why Ron was such a War Hero? No, seriously (even in canon), all he did, was a chess play in First year. That's all. Despite praises to his "strategic abilities", exact amount of them he demonstrated through series is nil. He is shortsighted, ill tempered, can't strategize for beans, knows nothing about anything, doesn't read, doesn't plan, doesn't think. Period. His only function is to hang on Harry's coattails, play his "best bud" and make Hermione's life as difficult as possible. Oh, and eat enormous amounts of food in most disgusting manner ever. And there are those who wander, why "Hermione on love potion" trope is so popular fandom.
