themuse123 chapter 13 . 7/27
Holy crap, this was tense, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. All of the action was incredibly entertaining and dark, it was sort of reminiscent of The New World. And like TNW, Fili was wonderful. I don't think I'll ever stop mentioning how well you write him. It's so refreshing; I used to come across fics all the time where he was basically relegated to background character, or the Love Interest, with very little authentic personality between the two. But in your fics he always seems himself, stoic and calm, yes, but like an actual person, as well. And in this chapter in particular it was clear what kind of king he would be- not just Thorin shining through, but Fili himself. And honestly he'll make a great one.
Highlights:
"They would have to draw strength from each other, now." (after Bilbo relying on his gift to get him out of things, this line gave me chills)
"'You mean use their sickness against them.'" (smart. and their whole working together after the fact, with Bilbo casually being all "you know, maybe you SHOULDN'T kill me" and Fili coming in with "oh yeah, ask for gems instead of gold" like what icons)
"He remembered well how paranoia had hounded Thorin while he'd been sick, how he'd been immovably convinced that everyone around him intended to steal the gold he had coveted so fiercely."
"'Don't you dare hurt him.'" (I also fucking got chills here)
"Fili had taken a lace from his boot and used it to slowly saw off a fragment of wood from one of the floorboards." (mad train car vibes)
"Kili gestured with his chin to the dead dwarf, breathing unevenly. 'He got the worst of it.'" (lol)
"Bilbo hoped, perhaps foolishly, that the pony had managed to get away." (that's all I'd be concerned with)
Wow, I really liked this chapter, and I'm so excited to see where it leads. I really cannot believe we're almost at the end, though; it seems like just yesterday I started reading this. Awesome update as usual, looking forward to the next one! :)
JustMonikadelete chapter 13 . 7/27
Ooh this chapter was very action filled and I loved everything about it. Great chapter again! Can't wait to see the ending
themuse123 chapter 12 . 7/20
Oh no, I was worried something like this was going to happen! So his powers are gone now completely, there's not any of it left? Bilbo's always been able to think his way out of trouble before, and I believe he'll be able to do it again, but...I really hope Kili is okay, that he and Fili can be rescued.
Highlights:
"Fili's calm demeanor was bracing, and Bilbo settled back against the cave wall." (good ole Fili)
"'We can handle them,' Kili said, his usual bravado shining through the exhaustion in his voice." (good ole Kili)
"'I have to be strong for him. Whatever happens, I have to make sure that he makes it out of this.'" (god, my heart hurts every time I think about how protective Fili is of Kili and how close they are and I really just want them both to be okay)
"Bilbo straightened and tried again, but time kept moving forward." (I know I already went over this but fuUCK bad timing!)
"Bilbo guessed this was part of the language of gestures that Bifur sometimes used, though he didn't know what had been said." (nice inclusion)
"Neither of them replied, but Fili and Kili shifted their positions so they were on either side of Bilbo." (they're such good bois I'm crying)
"'But time cannot be truly stopped, nor can it be turned back. You succeeded in saving Thorin...but you also failed." (really interesting, but also...ouchie, knowing that there's still that version of Bilbo crying over Thorin's body, that goes home to an empty house without him, like...damn)
So I'm very, VERY interested to see how Bilbo's going to get out of this. Those were always my favorite parts in the movie, watching him escape dangerous situations with his ingenuity and cleverness. And I honestly can't wait to see this happy ending, I'm so excited for him and Thorin to begin their lives together. Anyway, great chapter, looking forward to the next one!
themuse123 chapter 11 . 7/13
Fuck YES I always love when we get to this part! This kiss scene was so sweet and I'm so glad it happened now, after the trauma from the other reality. But man, talk about terrible timing lol Honestly though, I'm anxious to see how this new development is going to play out and what this dwarf is planning to do to Bilbo and Kili.
Highlights:
"Thorin immediately returned the embrace, securing him in his arms, and Bilbo squeezed his eyes shut. This alone was enough to assure him that everything would be alright." (this whole scene KILLED me, it was so sweet, they love each other so much omg)
Also, Dwalin is alive! Thank god.
"All four dwarves looked at him as though he'd suggested they ride the Mirkwood spiders into battle." (that would be dope though...)
"He was struck by the sudden desire to know Thorin, to understand who he was and who he had been, to know his thoughts before they were spoken out loud."
"Somehow, despite all the worries and responsibilities that came with running a kingdom, Thorin had remembered that and...and had made him an entirely new dining set." (I love this I love this I love this)
"'I can feel the mountain around me, as long as I am in contact with it.'" (Toph vibes)
"But Thorin stopped him with one hand on the back of his neck and pulled him back in."
"He did not spare a single thought to what would be considered proper or appropriate- only that it would be a bit awkward to do what he desired on the rocky floor where they were sitting." (lol)
This chapter really was a roller coaster from start to finish, and I'm even more anxious to see how this story is going to play out. I'm glad you say there will be a happy ending (I couldn't see you giving Thorin and Bilbo a sad ending anyway), but I wonder how things will resolve before we get there. Great chapter, I'm looking forward to the next! :)
JustMonikadelete chapter 11 . 7/12
Yess yes yes yes! It finally happened! I loved it absolutely! What a cliffhanger, can't wait for the next chapter!
themuse123 chapter 10 . 7/7
Well, the future he helped create certainly was darker but I can't say I'm too surprised by it. A lot of things happened after Smaug to change Thorin's perspective and shape him into the king he was in canon, and without those things it would've been much easier to succumb to the greed and paranoia haunting his lineage.
Highlights:
"Even if he could make the journey alone, he could not imagine settling down into his old life and simply forgetting everything that had happened."
"If he went back to the Shire, would it be just to find another version of himself living in his home?" (I was wondering that myself)
the scene where Bilbo stands up to Thorin, oh man...
"All of this joy was real and tangible, and he still had to say goodbye. He felt as though he could not touch it." (this hit me real hard)
Oh, man, that ending, dude... Poor Bilbo. I am enjoying this angst, though, and I'm also wondering where he'll be going next. You said you're reverting back to the original timeline, but I'm gonna throw out a wild guess that Bilbo will be transported to the past again? But yeah, I'm interested to see how witnessing this tragedy affects how he interacts with Erebor in the present. Also, definitely checking out that playlist! Great chapter as usual, and I'm looking forward to the next! :)
JustMonikadelete chapter 10 . 7/7
Nice chap! Can't wait to see what happens next. Though it would have been nice if everything was fixed by killing Smaug early on, it is reasonable that this doesn't fix it all. Important things never happened and I low-key expected that Thorin would have gone dark. Because now he didn't have his friends to help him to get out of it. So I understand what you did and why it didn't all work out. Can't wait to see what happens now!
Luinwen-2013 chapter 1 . 7/6
I hope this newfound power allows him to save Fili and Kili too!
themuse123 chapter 9 . 7/2
This chapter was very exciting, and I'm glad to see a showdown against Smaug where there wasn't absolute destruction. Also definitely agree that his inability to stfu is a flaw that needed to be exploited. But man, the whole time reading this there was just this pit in my stomach because I knew whatever happened, everything in the future/present was going to change, and Bilbo and Thorin (and the whole Company) have come so far...
Highlights:
"...because even if this was a dream or some strange vision, he could hardly refuse an offer of free food." (fat relate)
"But this Thorin would not know him, would not recognize him." (ouch, dude...)
"...and had a collection of bronze beads woven through her beard." (THANK you for actually letting the dwarf women have beards. I read a lot of stories back in the day where they did everything they could to never give them beards and it was very disappointing.)
Bilbo acting all large and in charge to get to Girion was choice. And I love that he thought of Thorin as his inspiration for that, it was sweet
Okay, I'm just going to say it: I LOVE Vistra, she is such a sweetheart, and also the literal best for being like "oh, you can't wait to see Girion? here, let me sneak you inside" with very little explanation. But aside from that, I'm real worried about whatever might be waiting for Bilbo back in his time. Great chapter, though, and I'm anxious to read the next!
JustMonikadelete chapter 9 . 6/28
Ooh I'm so excited to see what happens next! I'm kinda sad that the whole quest will now never have happened but who knows what will come next (we'll probably you) ooh I'm just really excited, I can't wait!
themuse123 chapter 8 . 6/24
Oh shoot, now I'm even more anxious to know what's going on! I always meant to watch some playthroughs of Life is Strange but just never got around to it, but now I'm kinda glad I didn't cuz I'd rather figure out what's up through your version. But damn, my brain is going wild with what might be going on.
Highlights:
"Either the dragon sickness would cause him to withdraw, or the fear of it would, and his own failed attempt to help him the last time still stung." (yes, I am all for this specific kind of angst, where one character thinks one thing but they don't know that another character thinks the complete opposite. similar to pining so that's probably why I like it lol But yeah. Also hoping this isn't, like, foreshadowing..)
"Ori's head snapped up, hands instinctively going to cover his work." (omg I felt this on a spiritual level. idk what it is about doing anything creative that makes people SO snoopy but yeah.)
Bilbo being all "you may have ONE" to Kili is the best
"Thorin looked down at the scone as if it was a gem he had plucked from the earth." (aw Thorin went from coveting the Arkenstone to coveting Bilbo's scones)
"'I fear this mission has truly been for nothing, and all will know it before the year is over.'"
I really enjoyed the story Bilbo told of the Fell Winter, and honestly that whole scene where Thorin confides in him. It's so sweet seeing how freely Thorin opens up to him compared to anyone else, and I know they still aren't telling each other everything (obviously lol), but I love their progression. Also, on a different note, thank you for sharing this story. It's really been nice lately to be able to open this (or WHL) up and pretend I'm somewhere else for a while. I hope that writing it has provided you with something like that as well, and I wish you strength and sanity in all of this. Anyway, great chapter, and I'm looking forward to the next!
(PS. Terrific song choice, I love Sir Sly and Nowhere/Bloodlines is dope. It does, however, make me a little nervous...specifically the end, you know. But, still. Majorly excited for your next update!)
themuse123 chapter 7 . 6/16
God, I'm so glad you mentioned that moment from the movie where Thorin's in the middle of losing it and then he hears Bilbo's voice and changes his tune. That is one of my favorite scenes, and I hope at some point Thorin actually comes clean about whose voice he actually heard.
Highlights:
"It scared him a little, to see Thorin- always so strong and immovable- in such a state of despair." (yes, but I love those moments where he shows his true self in front of Bilbo instead of trying to put on a facade)
"Thorin feared he would lose control and hurt him again." (oof)
I just love the thought of Ori and Bilbo nerding out over books for hours on end
The whole scene with Gandalf was great because your portrayal of him is amazing. You really capture the cadence of his speech (and his infuriating vagueness lol). Also, I am totally in agreement with him being a bastard, he really flips the wise old man trope on its head. I'm excited to see what you have planned for the next chapter!
themuse123 chapter 6 . 6/8
God, I knew it was just a matter of time before Bilbo really got hurt saving Thorin and this was intense, but I am SO HAPPY Thorin knows about Bilbo's powers now. His reaction does worry me a little, although I can't say it surprises me; of course he would see it as a reflection of his right to rule. I hope he's able to come to terms with that. Also really glad Dwalin wasn't among the dead (although I know that doesn't mean he's safe..)
Highlight:
"Before he knew it, he was running, dodging and slipping between dwarves as they began to move backwards." (LOVE this visual, super, super cool)
"His courage, his good heart, his selflessness- everything Bilbo loved about him was about to get him killed."
"A flash of black and gray appeared in his vision as Bifur slammed into the dwarf with the full weight of his body." (hell yeah)
Bilbo still being irritated with Thorin's stubborn ass even with a knife in his chest is peak Bilbo-ness
"Thorin, with his other hand free, placed it on Bilbo's uninjured shoulder, his thumb drawing small, comforting circles." (aww)
I love the little scene where Bilbo and Balin realize it's the dragon sickness. And speaking of, that's a wonderful development that I'm very excited to see play out (especially now that Thorin's better). Another great chapter, I can't wait for the next! Hope you're doing well, and until next time!
