Reviews for What to do When your Rival is a Mary Sue
Masquer Q chapter 3 . 8/26
The correct term would be a Gary Stu for boys.
Strange chapter 3 . 12/22/2019
This is awesome! Especially the way Latinum uses pure plot armor during chapter two... kind of reminds me of someone *cough* Ash *cough*. Anyway, I love this.
Guest chapter 3 . 12/9/2019
Great story. Always fun to be at about the other side of the rivalry. Please continue
Kronikankirjoittaja chapter 3 . 4/16/2019
This is good story :). Although Grey claimed that he is a boring person, in my opinion he is smart and fun. I really like how Grey is indifferent towards Latinum Omega (A.K.A. Gary Stu character).
Dragonsrule18 chapter 3 . 2/21/2019
Awesome chapter! I really like Grey, and I'm so glad Amanda got her Eevee back!
RandomDude chapter 3 . 2/20/2019
It would be freaking hilarious if, in the process of our resident Marty Sue trying to be the Protagonist, the non-main-character-Main-Character would take on that role instead. True, he wouldn’t become the Champion, but ensuring him the ability to achive his goal of a life of travel and befriending Pokémon would be nice. Doubly so if the sheer annoyance that the Marty Sue puts him through ensures him some sort of CEO position, or makes him the kind of famous Bill is.

I’d also like to point out that on The Pokémon games it’s usually the character most like Grey that is actually the protagonist. The rival is usually the one with a cool backstory and drive to be the best (Blue, Silver, and more recently, Hau/Gladion), where the Player Character is left nondescript so that the players can insert themselves into their role. And even continuing with that theme, most players after finishing the game usually fall into a niche where they only participate in the part of the game they enjoy most, like catching the whole Pokedex, hunting for Shiny Pokémon, fully exploring the territory, finishing up story subplots, or even learning how to maximize competitively with weird combinations of abilities and moves, like the Shedinja (I think that’s the right ‘Mon, the one that is immune to almost everything) that Grey is going to get. Basically, players usually only use the Champion position to advance their own goals.

Though this is not to say your warning is unwarranted. Marty Sue, or whatever his name is, is like the “casual” player who only wants the cool pokémon and doesn’t care about the NPCs. Even then though he’s like all the worst traits exaggerated, since most of those casual gamers don’t try to go out of their way to be jerks, and are mostly playing for the fun of it.

...

Long story short, the Marty Sue “Protagonist” is basically a standard (or bad) Pokémon Rival. He’s rude, he always initiates Combat, actually wants to be the best, has the Type advantage starter, is related to a person of high status of sorts, and treats the world like a game in some way. On the other hand, Grey is quiet, strategic, is immersed in the world, is generally seen as kind by the populace, and is constantly pushed into scenarios he has no control over.

At some point this is GOING to occur to Mr Marty Sue, whether it be by actually understanding Grey’s argument in the wrong way or by his own realization, who is “really” the protagonist. And I’m going to love every second of the wait.

Hopefully.

I mean this is just speculation. I could be completely wrong about that last part. It IS my headcannon though.

...

On a seperate note, have Grey make a Pokémon use ability swap on Shedinja to transfer over the ability “Sturdy”. Due to its max hit points only being at one, this makes Shedinja impossible to defeat due to the way the ability works (if at max hit points, damage cannot be reduced to below one). From there, he can use all the attacks he wants to beat Marty Sue at his own pace.

(Also, I keep saying “Marty Sue” as an in-between of “Mary Sue” and “Marty Stew”, the female and male forms of the term Mary Sue. You kept using the female one, so I was confused as to which one to use... especially since I am not going to keep going back to look up his name).

...

Anyways, thanks for the fic!
Strawhat Q chapter 3 . 2/19/2019
So THAT'S why anime logic doesn't work in real life. Huh.

Also, of course the mary sue rival was born to a family who somehow made it big into the stock market. Anywhosies, seeing as Lan-Lani-Lati- that guy was trying to pull the "hit on a cute chick" trope I imagine that's going to get him back in the slammer sometime in the future. And, you know, hopefully get him killed- I mean to give up on his stupid dream.
Ri2 chapter 3 . 2/19/2019
Even though we just met her, I like Amanda already. She REALLY loves that Eeevee. And now I'm shipping her with Grey for...some reason?
duskrider chapter 3 . 2/19/2019
Interesting start and good way to call out the bs that is suddenly gaining a pokemon not native to the area I mean sure the anime does it but at least they usually have a reason for it.
Masq chapter 2 . 7/1/2018
Yas! Well, not to Latinfuck, but for that last little paragraph there! I'm loving this so far!

Something is making me curious about Mr Mary Sue's 'Special training'.

Can't wait to see what comes next! Keep up the writing!
Mokkel chapter 2 . 6/7/2018
I'm quite confused.
the previous chapter gave me the the impression that Latium was the only aspect of the Mary Sue'vers being a Grey Stue himself. and the rest of the world, including the people, are normal with real characterisation.
but in this chapter is feels like Grey is the only real character in a Sue'vers fic seeing as Latinum has his own fan club and was able to pull off a deus ex machina at the last moment.
...also the way you made the HP bar appear was so freaking cool!
Ri2 chapter 2 . 6/4/2018
AR vision for HP bars and stuff? That's actually pretty cool.

I despise Latinum.
Strawhat Q chapter 2 . 6/3/2018
Listen Grey, if you want to actually win against that guy you need to start watching animes and using them to come up with more creative tactics in order to outsmart him. AKA, figure out some bullshit strategy that makes no sense but works anyways because it's a plothole so it helps move the plot along. Like electric armor. Or hacking illegal moves onto your pokemon. Or teaching your pokemon more than four moves.

... is that going to be a thing Latinum does?
StrifeStelar Mizo chapter 2 . 6/3/2018
This is pretty interesting, pointing out the flaws of a Mary Sue in a story is not something you see everyday.

And about that last battle, I feel like its mixing elements of the game and anime, with Grey following the actual rules of the game, while MC comes is with anime logic and fucks everything up.
ARSLOTHES chapter 1 . 5/10/2018
this is hilarious but I hope you pair your mc with violet just to stick it to the mary sue
