If this fanfic is canon, at least up to the first Hogwarts Express trip, then I'm pretty sure that the Dursleys took Harry on a boat ride to the deserted island, where on his 11th birthday, he (re-) met Hagrid and found out he was a wizard... so why would his "1st year" boat trip to Hogwarts castle be the first time he was in a boat?

This is an excellent story so far! I've thought about Having Harry arrive early at King's Cross to meet Hermione before he meets the Weasleys keep up the good work! I am definitely looking forward to the next installment!
