When I was posting about all the Catholic stuff, I forgot to say how much I love the story. But I do love it. And basically everything you write. Thank you!

So I'm catholic and know what I speak of. Technically speaking, if Lucien wasn't married in the Catholic Church and it was only a civil marriage then in the eyes of the church he was never married at all. No need for an annulment. All he would need was a civil divorce and he would be free and clear to marry Jean. I'd have to go back to my CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church) to double check this but i think because he was baptised, depending on if he was married in the Christian faith his marriage might still be viewed as valid so an annulment would be necessary. BUT an annulment is NOT the same as a divorce. It means that because of whatever circumstance, you were never married in the first place. Usually because the basic form of marriage, for it to be free, total, faithful, and fruitful, isn't fulfilled in some way. Example: you never really wanted to have children or you had no intention of staying faithful to your spouse or you weren't actually free to get married (coerced or already married). Anyways, thats a bit of an oversimplification of some pretty complex canon law and church doctrine. BUT I hope it helps.
