| Sugie chapter 3 . 1/27/2018 A proposal, I knew it! I love how unrelentingly gentle Matthew remains despite Mary's prickly disposition. Her brittleness I think serves as a shield, a way to protect herself from the reality of her circumstances, and all that she's facing. It must've been so overwhelming, especially in those days for Mary to face not only Pamuk's assault, but then also having to deal with the consequences and the alienation and scorn that an out of wedlock pregnancy would've brought. M/M barely know each other so far though, I wonder what compelled Matthew to suggest marriage? Mary must be in shock! |

As a reader I would like to have heard / understood a little more about what has led Matthew to be so sure of his interest in her to the point where he is confident enough to propose. I will be interested in how Mary replies! |

Mary is still herself, proud and uncomfortable about showing weakness and her conflicting feelings about Matthew (loved the description of his smile!). I didn't expected Matthew to ask a question first, I thought he was going to propose right away, but I love he did. Also, that the truth about Pamuk came out. I liked that Mary doesn't suspect or allows her to suspect at all. |
