I loved this. I did something kind of similar a while back - though you flipped the care taker dynamic, which I liked - and I thought this was an interesting spin on the Pitch/Jack friendship. You're very right, there are not nearly enough of these stories.
I also dig that Jack understood the 'fear is necessary' thing, which is something I think he'd have a strong grasp of.

Dude! You could totally make this into an AU fanfic where Jack is a friend of Pitch before he meets the Guardians! This would be awesome because in the books The Guardians of Childhood Pitch actually has a very tragic backstory. Look up General Kozmotis Pitchiner. In the books, he did not become evil because he was a bad person. He was corrupted and twisted into Pitch Black when he was trying to save his daughter. There are not enough fanfics where Pitch actually gets help and a chance of overcoming that corruption. I mean it is wonderful as it is, but there are sooo many things you could do with this!

I loved this. I thought the way you built up their relationship was great. I love how Jack was willing to go out on a whim and Pitch was willing to pay back some kindness. I loved the part where Pitch tries to test his reaction to him and Jack gave him a surprise bit of wisdom. I thought you wrapped it up well with Pitch leaving a note behind before slipping out unnoticed. I also appreciated them bonding over the mural enemy. Great work.
