Reviews for Past is Prologue
bob5631 chapter 1 . 7/5
Is there any posibility that "fairy dance alternate" Will be continued?.
Quathis chapter 8 . 6/29/2019
A better reaction than I thought would happen. I expected to see more people breaking under the unrealized hope. That may just indicate that they are so used to unrealized hope that it barely fazes them anymore. Not that there aren't disenfranchised individuals that would sell out a team member for a perceived better deal, but are more likely to get betrayed right back due to their untrustworthy nature. At the very least, the return will be harder than Azumi and Yu are expecting. Until next time.

Great chapter and story so far please continue this story soon.
Quathis chapter 7 . 5/14/2019
Ah, I though things were a bit too easy. Here is the real trial, as someone is going to be left behind. Whether it is the people of the caravan, or just Yu and/or Azumi who are left to Fenrir, people will be separated. It is a big decision and trial for those involved. Given what we've seen so far, this will tear the caravan apart in many ways. Lots of diplomacy would be needed to keep things together, something no one has really shown a capacity for. This is a brutal era, and words have far less power now than martial capability. Until next time.

Quathis chapter 6 . 6/30/2018
Good reactions on both sides. Enjoyed seeing Azumi get taken out of her usual comfort zone, and the two of them dealing with a very unusual situation that they were hoping for. It was a good fight as well, showed our main POV characters just why God Eaters are looked up to. Until next time.
TBone511 chapter 5 . 2/16/2018
I figured it was only a matter of time before the God Eaters made their appearance, even for one such as I who is not familiar with the lore is excited to see where this goes. For one who is unfamiliar with this setting I am eager to see how the God Eaters conduct themselves in combat against the Aragami.

The handling of Azumi’s neck wound was done quite well, my believability may have still been slightly stretched given the amount of blood she lost and how much distance they travelled but I think that was more a testament to Azumi’s determination than a break from reality. The events of this chapter and the previous chapter also make me wonder if the opposing survivor faction will be featured as the main antagonists of this fic or if the faction is a minor antagonist compared to the Aragami.

I also liked the bit of reality ensues when the doctors refused to let Azumi participate in helping with her injuries and sedated her, it would have been remiss of him to allow his patient to potentially over exert herself while recovering from a neck wound. Perhaps it is just me having a lapse in memory regarding the background of one of the side characters, but why is the “Doctor” referred to with parentheses around his title? Is he not a real medical professional? Considering that he was surprised by how long Azumi was unconscious seemed to imply that he oversedated her by accident, which does not bode well for his supposed credentials.

Once again you have done exceptional work on the sibling relationship and their symbiotic benefit to each other, I am impressed that Yu was able to triage Azumi’s wound well enough for her to survive the trek back to the base, I also enjoyed the moment where Yu declares that he can protect his sister too. A particular moment of Azumi’s character that I enjoyed was when she appeared to have a PTSD moment when her bandage was removed and she heard the ‘thump thump’ associated with the Aragami approach, it did an excellent job of portraying a lot with minimal detail regarding the situation the characters are living in.

I was wondering before this chapter, are Azumi and Yu the only scouts in the group? This chapter seemed to confirm that they weren’t given that they were able to travel while Azumi was incapacitated and I assume the group did not do so without scouting their travel route.

I cannot find fault with Azumi wanting Minato to take care of Yu, the story thus far has shown (at least to me) that their parents are unreliable and I can understand that she did not want to entrust Yu to them. She is not being cruel to her parents so much as she is being concerned for her brother’s well being and it also proves how much she trusts Minato.

Great work on this chapter, I look forward to the next.

Thanks for updating. :)
Quathis chapter 5 . 10/31/2017
Azumi's practically shines through even regarding her own mortality. Their progression here shows that her dad is learning and adapting, despite his initial hesitancy.

Does Azumi really say "ahem" and "huff" or is she making coughing and breathing sounds? Something that has thrown me off with her. Just realizing now how to put it into words

I am looking forward to their thoughts on the God Eaters in combat.

Until next time.
Black-Trooper chapter 4 . 9/1/2017
I finally got around to reading all four chapters.

To me, this is easily one of the best written God Eater fanfic I've read out there. Even though Yuu is the canonical protagonist for the first game, we players don't really know much about him other than the fact his a nice guy, who cares about the well-beings of his comrades. So, writing this prequel story regarding his past is pretty interesting and original.

Azumi seem like a good example of a strong, compelling female character without coming off as cringey. I like the way she has this pragmatic, no-nonsense approach when it comes to fighting: shooting first, stabbing kneecap and punching groin. At the same time, I like the way she's not completely invincible when there are moments her foes are able to get the upper hand on her. Most importantly, I enjoy her interactions with Yuu, trying to look out for her younger brother the best she knows how in that crapsack world they live in. All in all, she's a pretty believable character, one that I can relate to.

It's nice that Yuu also has his moments to shine. As a thirteen year old kid, you don't expect him to become a bonafide badass over night. I mean, not every kids in a post-apocalyptic world can be like Clementine from Walking Dead for instance. His still young and learning the ropes. But his very capable of stepping up to the occasion when called upon: saving his sister and father during their fight with the bandits.

The dialogue between the characters feels completely natural. I don't get the sense that it feels forced at all. I can read it, and think to myself this is how a real-life conversation would go down. The amount of showing is also pretty good. It brings life to the characters, helping to immerse your readers into the story. The action scenes are also quite intense and exciting, and doesn't feel too drag out. And the pacing feels right.

I am kinda baffled about Haru, the father of Azumi and Yuu. As the leader of the group and someone who used to be a police officer before, he doesn't strike me as an individual who's assertive enough for a man of his position. And he seems blinded by clinging onto his old moral code. As it's been almost two decades since the apocalypse started, you'd thought he already learned by now you can't reason with everyone, that not everything is black and white, and there are times he has to be utterly ruthless to protect his family.

The other characters in their group haven't exactly been memorable. Take Yashiko for instance. Maybe it could be elaborated why she seems hesitated at the idea of going out on a run, and is perfectly content letting two siblings risk their lives to gather the much needed supplies.

Anyways, I enjoy this chapter. I feel kind of bad for Akihiro though. No matter what he did, it was a lose-lose situation. If he doesn't obey his boss, his severed head could be on a pike. And even if he did obey his boss, he could end up dying to Azumi, who happened to be a formidable opponent. He wasn't necessary a bad person. His just a guy working for the wrong boss.

It'll be interesting to see what the group will do next. I reckon at this point, they have only two choices, really. They pick up and leave or they choose to fight back against Etsuka and her gang in an all-out war.

I look forward to see the next chapter :)
NocturnalHunter chapter 4 . 7/5/2017
I apologize for my delayed review. (Real life things and such)

I have to say you write really good action scenes. Not too drawn out and not to short to make it too hasty and confusing. It's the right kind of flow of words to create excitement and let's the reader know what is happening right now.

From story persepective, welp, not a particularly good situation to find yourself in. I'm postively intrigued how that is going to resolved.

Personally I think it is a good decision to not drag out fights, even with named characters. In my opinion, it makes enemies more human as in that the enemy can be as quickly killed as anybody else when they make the wrong decision.

(Perfectly set evil cliffhanger by the way)
TBone511 chapter 4 . 7/4/2017
That was a pretty ruthless cliffhanger to leave us on! Three individuals, one unconscious and another wounded with only basic triage, trapped in hostile territory and possibly low on ammunition. I hope the next chapter can come before the waiting drives us crazy!

Excellent work, you certainly have a peculiar talent when it comes to writing action scenes that are as compelling as they are exciting. I also liked how each of the three characters got moments to shine and Azumi was not carrying the whole team with that scene. The only issue I had with the chapter was that I think there were several parts of the Author's Notes that could have been included in the narration. Having important explanations in the Author's Notes instead of the story proper makes it appear that you were aware of some Fridge Logic in the storytelling but decided not to adjust the story and instead included explanations in the Author's Notes.

However, that shortcoming does not mitigate the high quality of this chapter and this recent update proved that even after a hiatus your writing is as great as ever.
erica.phoenix16 chapter 4 . 6/30/2017
I'm worried about Azumi's injuries. Sure, she kicked ass, but that battle was brutal!

Thanks for updating. :)
Quathis chapter 4 . 6/28/2017
Humans can be the biggest pains in life, that happens with free will. Though that also means they can be the biggest blessings as well. It's what makes life so confusing at times. Not this time though. Very cut and dry situation of "us vs them" that they couldn't talk their way out of. Until next time.
NocturnalHunter chapter 3 . 12/25/2016
I apologize for the extreme delay of the review; a lot has happened, so I couldn't respond immediately.

First, I have to say that I like Azumi's character. She has a special charm to her being on the one hand mature and experienced and on the other, hotheaded and almost irresponsible when it comes to her own health. (like ignoring Doctor's orders/advice) Hopefully, such acts of stubborness doesn't come back to bite her in the future.

A conflict between these two groups will probably end bloody and not in favor for Azumi's and Yuu's group, since the other not really hesitant when it comes to killing people. Considering the circumstances, Azumi has a lot of life-threatening problems on her hands now and I'm curious what happens next, especially how this delicate situation is going to be resolved now.
