I should be ashamed, however a part of me dearly hopes the manticore darted Dolores and then ate her. Her total disappearance would probably not have caused Hagrid's firing if only the firsties had not been there to witness it.

One does have to wonder why Hagrid got the blame for a wrong delivery, but then perhaps the real reason was that he ordered the manticore at all.

Given Dumbledore's track record on hiring Defense teachers, sadly Hagrid doesn't seem to be an entirely impossible candidate for the position. Given the quality of Umbridge's teaching, he also wouldn't be worse than she at the job. And vice versa - what a horror CoMC could be with DU in charge. I imagined that she had at the very least imperiused or confunded the centaur, if not permanently damaged it by drugs and perhaps trauma (we never have any indication that she can actually do magic of that calibre but there are no doubt people in various branches of the ministry who could provide a suitably damaged creature for her). To her credit, however, care of Kneazles is an extremely appropriate topic for the class, a lesson that many of the students will use in later life! There's precious little of that kind of thing in Hagrid's lesson plans.

While Hagrid is certainly knowledgeable about magical creatures, the less can be said about his teaching skills the better.
