Well, they are pretty optimistic about life spans and health. My father, all his friends, my grandparents several uncles and aunts, died before reaching 70. And many of them didn't do hard jobs.
But, this is fiction, so we can pretend that a girl truly likes an old man and that said old man will be in great shape and live long.

This was utterly exquisite. It was so incredibly compelling that I just read right through like, the last 75% of it and boy do I need to go to sleep. XD Your writing flows so well and you capture a distinct time and place and I can't think of one character that was in your main focus that wasn't dynamic and compelling each time they appeared.

For John and Clara to get so much more time than they had hoped for brings tears to my eyes because it was so well done and believable.
