I was torn between fear and sadness. Imagining all this stuff happen to little Castle nearly made me cry.
And the mystery...I hoped for an explanation but I also think it's good without one because he obviously didn't tell anyone about it on the show either.
Although I have to say, I'd love to read a sequel or continuation of this maybe some time in the future ;)

It's funny...I was watching a program on the Travel & Escape channel called "Monsters and Mysteries in America" earlier this evening and the middle segment was about so-called Shadow Men, mysterious wraith-like creatures who supposedly whisper terrible nothings in people's ears. So, reading this really became ten kinds of spooky, imagining Castle possibly facing down such a beast at age 11 and witnessing the death of an innocent because such a creature was hunting him.

Now, while I love this little tale of what could have affected Castle so much, I figure the big mystery on the show will be rooted in reality...the series has dabbled with mysteries having a seemingly paranormal cause, but I figure anything like this will be Castle's 11-year old mind trying to process accidentally witnessing some crime and then thinking an innocent person was killed because he failed to act. I honestly don't know if any explanation can be better than this though ;D

Holy crap. This was everything I've ever wanted in Castle's mystery writer origin story and I love it. Your descriptions of everything are haunting and carry just the right tinge of chilly fall. Seriously good job. If the canon explanation doesn't live up to this I'll be sorely disappointed.
