I think you should have had Sam look up and wink at them when, Daniel said he cheated and read the manual. They have worked together a long enough, and have brought enough stuff back (that have the instructions written on them), that she would know that he may get information so, she would keep an ear to him and vice versa.

technically daniel jackson isn't a technology scientific genius(in learning new things arena through trial and error) he just cheats by reading the instruction manual.
