Simon/Kaylee is so sweet. Of course I would rather be in a romance with Simon myself but since that's not an option then this will do, :) They do make such a cute couple. I think with some clever thinking and tinkering we can make it possible for Kaylee to continue being Serenity's mechanic, all we have to do is think outside the box and it can work. Your River is very boring so far, she's too ordinary, keep working on it, you'll get better I think, I hope. Another thing you might consider is looking into the feelings of the charactors more, how they're feeling about these challenging circumstances. It may seem self explanatory, but the reader can connect better if they see what's going on in people's minds and feelings.

This is interesting enough so far. I'm surprised that no one has put Fillian's love interest from Castle in Inara's place before, you're the first one I've seen do it and I've been around longer than most I'd say. I'm willing to go with it. What I think is potentially going to undo this story is Kaylee's apparent parilization, they'll never keep Simon or River aboard after he caused that, they'll get dumped at the next planet and we'll never hear from them again. In fact Mal would kill Simon if it weren't for River needing him, he's not attached or beholden to River but she's touched and so he can't just leave her with no one to look after her. Although he doesn't totally know River is touched yet, so in this timeline you're creating maybe he'd still kill Simon inspite of River and drop her on the next planet by herself. Of course there's a longshot that Simon could fix Kaylee? I hope? We'll see what happens.
