This actually reminds me of a theory I read on a book review of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
That Hyde isn't really real and that instead of causing a physical transformation, the mixture Jekyll created just took away his ability to care about the repercussions of his actions and so, he just did what he wanted, feeling different.
But, if that were true, many plot-holes show up, so, nope!
