I didn't find this OOC at all. I liked the background set up, and the friendship between Baxter and Anna. John buying the sewing machine for Anna while in London was just the sweetest, and her using it to make baby clothes to let John know of the pregnancy was adorable. I loved her holding his hand to her belly, and the line "their hands this time laced together on her stomach, forming an extra layer of protection over the life that they had created with their love". That was beautifully worded.

I didn't feel this was OOC but maybe that's just me because I love that moment when they find out they are parents. This was so cute and I love Baxley :)

I think you handled the aftermath of S4 really well, and John's concern was on point throughout. I really liked the chatter in the servants' hall which added to the whole story, and the thread (oops, that wasn't a pun) about the sewing machine. This little interaction between John and Mrs Hughes made me sad, but I liked reading it too.

Awww, they are so sweet together. I love reading about them at home! Anna saying she always liked to hand mend before they were married to spend time with John was so cute. And the news was pretty much confirmed with Anna worrying about carrying the machine :) But awww, the way she announced it was so adorable. It's bittersweet when she says she thought it might never happen but so beautiful that it has. And aww, in their pyjamas too. So cute :)

I eagerly await the sequel! (And oh lol, Mrs P's comment about the machines :D)

I've always thought that Bates and Anna would be better off than the other employees, first two salaries from high up positions and then the inheritance (how much could Vera have spent before he got it back after she died) and then the rent money. Does anyone know if the cottage is rent free?
