Just finished your story, thanks for sharing with us all! and in response to you being concerned with the pace, I thought it was great and I read it all in one go.
I also thought that although I'd have liked more depth to the characters I did find it good non the less. Hope there's more coming!

Well, a good sign of a non Mary-Sue are physical flaws like freckles (make her have loads of them, since she's obviously an outdoory person. Not the cute as a button sprinkle of freckles, but the consistent kind that gingers or people who stay outside all the time tend to have). I like that she's lanky.

In the sequel, though, be very careful not to give her Sueish traits, and make the summary make her look like a flawed character or you'll get readers to make a judgement and assume that Eira's 'yet another' Mary Sue. And you can make the plot unique.

What a good story! And since the dragons are meant to resemble some household pets in their mannerisms, then you're right to guess that the creatures would be more over-protective of Astrid whilst she's carrying Eira (nice name choice, I'm Welsh so I knew that it meant snow immediately. Was it meant to coincide with the meaning of her dragon's name?). My brother's girlfriend is pregnant, and if there're any dogs close-by they get confused or protective because they can sense/hear the baby.

I'm curious to see how you'll handle the sequel. :) I'm confused, though, how old is Eira supposed to be in the end? And I like that Hiccup and Astrid's child is a girl - there're too many 'a boy and his dragon' stories. Time for a female.

I actually liked the pacing. I got real busy right when the story finished so... now off to eventually read the sequel (I have a dozen other HTTYD stories to catch up on... :P )
