Reviews for Questionable Experiments
Cattersnaz chapter 4 . 8/3/2016
What a great exploration of obsession! You've written a great rendition of Riddler and Scarecrow, really true to the canon. And what's great about this story is that the isn't an explicitly romantic element from the get go, if one does come out it'll seem more realistic as the two have had time for feelings to manifest. A great read so far!

Katherine chapter 4 . 8/6/2014
This idea highlights my pet theory that Jonathan Crane could have been the greatest psychiatrist, healer of the mind, that ever (fictionally) lived. How many people DON'T need to hear their own ego tell them exactly what they bury and are afraid to see? That could put someone's therapy forward by years, really knowing their own problem and what all their other problems stem from.

I've always thought, in low doses, Crane's 'toxin' could have amazing clinical uses. If it could be kept below the threshold of delirium and a person could (having given informed consent) see the things his experimental 'patients' see, while still being aware they were safe in a comfortable office, they could face themselves safely and heal.

But, Jonathan Crane picked a very different road. Or actually, it was picked for him, back in Georgia... Which is why he's so pitiful as well as frightening. We have an inherent instinct to help others, nearly from birth, certainly by the age of 1 year.

This is confirmed by repeated studies. One example; if a researcher pretends to accidentally drop something, then looks upset by it, a toddler will usually attempt to hand it back to them, etc. and it's been tried in many different ways. It takes much longer for kids to learn to use this in their language, obviously, which is why we try to tell them to be empathetic, to say thank you and sorry and not be hurtful. I mean, a toddler hasn't built up a whole lot of ego yet, really.

This instinct was there, even in Crane, but his was quite literally tortured out of him as a child. Thanks, great granny. Though granny is definitely an example of a tendency toward sociopathy already in his genetics (not to mention his grandmother who said to leave him in the trash, his mother who abandoned him without objection to such a fate - his great grandmother was the one who told him that story, and reminded him of it often enough that he would absolutely know he was unloved and could never expect to be), nurture is just as important in preventing antisocial personality disorder from manifesting in such a way.

'The healthy man does not torture others. Generally, it is the tortured that become the torturers.' - Carl Jung
Kyof chapter 3 . 6/28/2014
The plot thickens! Well, this story is just gorgeous. I think Jon and Eddie are interacting realistically. You did the characterization beautifully. It's a real pity that fewer people write for this pairing, as it is my absolute favorite and the first I ever shipped; however, I'm grateful that you are writing it so well! The boys are so stubborn, but they're getting there(I wouldn't expect anything else). I adore the addition of Zsaasz and Firefly, and I can't wait to see who else shows up. I love this story and I'm sure the next update will be worth the wait. Thank you and keep up the good work!
