Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Over the years, I've accumulated various requests as a beta for different stories and written material including essays, short stories, poetry, proposals, and of course, fan fictions. During the editing process, I require that the author and I discuss various aspects of the written material if relevant to the overall story or if I think they may prefer one option of editing over another. I try to help the author fine-tune the story by bouncing ideas off each other - if this is not preferred, that's fine as well. For a taste and sample of my beta skills, please visit any one of the three stories I have written so far. "Say My Name" is the most earliest of my written works, with "AlNel in Murderland" being the second most recent and "Good Night, Detectives" (A fanfic of the show The Batman) being the most recent, and much grittier than my Star Ocean fics. The most recent story I have beta'd for is titled "To Fight for a Bad Guy" by golumfryingeggs, chapters 11-16. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm obsessed about grammar in a written work - not just the sentence structure, but also the correct punctuation. I'm also skilled in spelling, word phrasing, sentence structures, and organization of paragraphs and ideas. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Sometimes it is difficult to acclimate the style of the author when I am editing. This only occurs whenever I suggest changes in the story or events; this is easily corrected with discussions between the beta and author. Another weakness of mine is when I suggest events or ideas which may not align with what the author had in mind; also very easily corrected with talks between the author and I. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I love complex stories with depth and originality, or a well-written flash of reality. My preferred genres are action, comedy, and romance, maybe with a smidge of the tiniest bit of angst to give the story that much richness of flavour and reality. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Please, no continuous angst or depressive emo-ness. Pointless fluff coming from nowhere is also not preferred, although sometimes appreciated in complex fics in sparing doses. Cliche ideas are generally not welcome, but if they develop into something more that's alright. Crossovers are also not very welcome, as this usually invites a whole onslaught of potential complications and problems. While it may be a good idea to combine more than one game/story, the possible negatives far outweigh the possibility of a good outcome (in my opinion). ALSO: if the characters are too shallow or generic, this will be an instant turn-off. |
