Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I tend to focus on spelling and grammar, but I can be a bit lax about it. I'm also pretty good at character and plot development (though my earlier stories don't really show that) as well as detail. br /br / Expectations: I will be going over spelling and grammar, but please, please proofread it. Don't just write it and say "Oh, well if there's any mistakes, the beta will catch them." If I see excessive spelling/grammar mistakes, IM/text speak (unless its essential, such as the character is sending a text), or it looks like you let your six-year-old sibling write it, I'm going to send it back to you and tell you to find someone else. I expect you to have some basic writing skills. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I would say my biggest strength is spelling, then character/plot/setting development. Before I write a story, I like to spend a lot of time researching the series, time period, country, fads, culture, just whatever I think will enhance the plot or make the characters a bit more believable. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Detail. I like to focus on a lot of detail so the reader can get a clear picture but sometimes I tend to go overboard. I also think that I take to long to get to the point. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm not going to lie, I really, really, prefer yaoi/slash/femmeslash, but I will take het if asked. I'm not going to try beta-ing humor (even though it is one of my favorite genres) because everyone has a different sense of humor; I may not think it's funny, but everyone else might think it's hilarious. I will beta romance, parody, drama, hurt/comfort, tragedy (though it's really not my favorite), multi-chapters, and one-shots (preferred). I will beta M-rated stories (seeing as that's all I read) and I will also beta the..."disturbing" (S&M, rape-if it is essential to the plot, murder-again, essential to the plot, etc.) |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Het is not my cup of tea, but I will read/beta it, if asked. I'm not one for those stories that have multiple pairings or the point of story is to pair up two characters. I'm not one for too much angst, most of it will just end up with me mocking it. I'm not too keen on the high school AUs; those generally end up as a "let's see how many pairings we can come up with." I'm not going to beta for a fandom that I don't follow or like, sorry. br /br / I will not beta a Mary-Sue fic or a self-insertion. I don't want read about you, I want to read about your characters.br / br / I also reserve the right to reject a fic on the basis of plot, fandom, Mary-Sue, or sheer hopelessness. |
