Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hi, well, myself as a beta reader. I have done a lot for friends and acquaintances over the net for a while now, so I have some experience. br /br / I am currently a fourth year university Psychology student and excel in my English studies (high end theory).br / br / My beta reading style however, is a learning style. I will highlight your work where it needs to be fixed up and leave comments when needed. It will be up to you to fix what I have marked. So if you are after a beta that just fixes everything up for you and sends you the clean story ready for posting, then I am not your beta. However, it can be arranged if you really want it to be, or after the first draft has been sent. Nevertheless, this is great for people who want to improve their English skills in grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and spelling. br / br / Therefore people of all levels are welcome to give me ago.br / br / I can however, be a hard critic. So I will tell you if your story is any good or is seriously lacking, its not meant to be hurtful or flames inducing but honest. It will be my opinion, so it will be up to you to take it or leave it. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strengths, well I have always excelled in English so my spelling, punctuation and grammar is quite good. Being in the top 15% of your class of currently 200-50 students at university level requires you to be.br /br / I also use a higher vocabulary class when necessary, sometimes this is inappropriate as some readers are just not at this level, some readers will just give up on stories in which there are too many big and difficult to understand words. But fixing up the vocabulary will be between you and I, to whatever level you wish.br / br / Another strength would have to be beta reading style, so if you do want to improve your English, whether you are a native speaker or not, give me ago. br / br / Oh, I like to say, that I tell it as it is, with no sugar or cherry on top. I have been called very blunt in the past. But I can be very nice as well so there is no need to scared or anything lol. Also if you don’t like what I change that is fine by me, I’m not going to fight with you, it is your story after all. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My weakness, I suppose would have to be time tenses. If anyone has studied English, they would have realised that it is a hard and complex language. We have about 14 time tenses, if I recall correctly. So all of you English speaking people who think we have only past, present and future, are dead wrong Lol. br /br / So when writing fics, I, like a lot of native English speakers seem to be out of tense or suddenly change tense a lot. It is really just what English speaking people do (like sounding like we are asking a question but really making a statement, although that is really just an Australian thing). So if I am beta reading your work and you are a native English speaker, we should be fine. However, I will fix up your work when really apparent and when it seriously needs to be fixed, but if you are not a native and are writing a fic in English, we may just have a few arguments on time tenses, I only say this because it has happened in the past. Lol. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I would really like to prefer to beta read stories that I know the base of. If I haven't read that book/manga or watched the TV show, anime or movie, it might be a bit difficult following your work, especially if it is cannon (true to the original). Also I would not know if the characters are in character or not. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Yaoi is fine; I will beta read that. However, it has to have some substantial plot. I will not beta read smut. br /br / Yuri I must admit kind of freaks me out. However, it would be unfair of me to be biased. So again, I will beta read if only it has a substantial plot and reason for relationship, not ‘hey just for the sake of it lets jump into bed together’ style. |
