Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am English, a retired scientist and IT professional. I read with an eye for sentence construction and punctuation, the correct use of words and tense, and - of course - spelling. I look for each sentence to make sense, and for actions and dialogue to fit the characters. I look for logic in a story, and consistency - e.g. a character cannot be blond in one paragraph and bald in the next. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
In my own writing I am more interested in plot and situation than character development or inter-personal relationships. I make efforts to polish my prose and make the best use of words; I enjoy interesting turns of phrase but value clarity more. I try to employ a large vocabulary while avoiding obscure words. I enjoy writing crossovers and relish the challenge of blending two different story lines. I write both humorous and serious pieces and am not restricted to a few fandoms: for example, my stories range from Postman Pat to Gormenghast; Wallace and Gromit to Star Trek. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I don't feel qualified to judge or betaread any form of poetry. I much prefer writing which tells a story, rather than musings or pure descriptions. I don't write 'romantic' fiction, so I'm not the best person to beta read it. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I would like to help those whose first language is not English; I admire what they do, and believe they can benefit the most from suggestions I might make. I would be happy to check for "Englishness" - if you are an American wanting to write in a UK style I could translate for you (e.g. "pants" to "trousers", "sidewalk" to "pavement", etc.) I don't think I could do it the other way round! I am interested in cross-overs, the more unlikely the better. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I will not betaread stories which are - or should be - rated as M. I have no problems in reading such stories, I just don't want to get involved. |
