As a betareader, I try to work with the author to get their story across correctly, while also striving to edit stories so that they have proper grammar, something I have found to increase the enjoyability of a story for most readers, myself included. While I also offer suggestions on the author's story if they are agreeable to that, it is ultimately their work and I will always accept that; whatever they want their story to have in it, so be it.

I work by obtaining a copy of the chapter, reading it, then submitting a copy with edited spelling and word usage back to the author with possible suggestions, allowing them to make any final changes they want before posting it or sending it past me for a second review. I strive to work in a timely fashion and get transcripts back within a day or two if I can.

If an author has already posted part of their story by the time they contact me, I am fully willing to go through and edit their previous posts so they can repost them with the corrections if they so desire.

I normally write from third-person perspective, so stories written from this angle are the easiest for me, though first-person is also rather easy to work with. Grammar is important to me, so I tend to be a "Grammar Nazi" when spellchecking, just to try and make sure the story reads smoothly and has the appropriate choice of words, i.e. I don't want to see the word 'poignant' replaced with 'pregnant'; and yes, I see that mistake a lot.

I am not as strong at writing from views other than third-person or first-person, so I usually don't edit stories written as such to try and avoid that. I also tend to shy away from editing more than two stories at one time so that I can do my best to stick with them until the end; I also tend to bug authors I work for on their update speed, since most stories I tend to edit are ones I like to read myself.

I normally prefer stories I know a bit about, like Bleach, Halo, Mechwarrior/Battletech, Legend of Zelda, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc. etc. In addition, my favorite stories are adventure/romance types; call me a sentimental old fool, but that's what I prefer to edit and read.

While I won't hold it against the stories, their authors, or the fans of them, I don't like tragedies, horror, or other things like that. I also dislike mushy, lovey-dovey perfect stories and the like; I'm a traditionalist happy-ending, boy-gets-girl story lover, but I do like to see at least some realism and hardship in a story...
