Well I'm quite thorough when I read something and I always seem to spot errors which very few can. I usually go through a chapter once, fine-combing it for any and all errors then I read through it again to make sure it's legible and properly written. I'm a real perfectionist so I like to make sure everything is perfect or as close to perfect as possible when beta-ing someone's story as I feel if someone has asked me to do something for them, I should do the very best I can! I love to read and writing is my main passion so combining my two main passions and using them to improve and help others is a big bonus to me!
I've beta-read many stories for friends on this site as well as on a number of other fiction sites. I'm very honest with people when they send me something to beta. I will point out their errors and give them my opinion on the chapter. I think by doing this, I help the author to improve and thereby prevent the error from arising in their next chapters. I'm not nasty about it though, I will present the error in a very kind and honest way without being mean or critical. Constructive criticism is the key to helping one improve I think! I'm always there to help as well, not just in beta-ing but also if the author wants to bounce a few ideas off me and get my feedback, I enjoy doing that as well.

I'm good at dialogue and spotting grammatical and spelling errors. I'm really good at thorough descriptions though I don't go overboard and I know how to make a story flow pretty well.

Sometimes characterisation is difficult when writing. As a beta-reader I often have the problem of correction mistakes which aren't really mistakes such as words which are spelt differently depending upon whether the person is using American-English or British-English.

I prefer beta-reading stories for genres and areas that I actually read and enjoy. I will beta anything though, even if it does come from a category I don't normally read. I like to help everyone with their writing skills and frankly, I will read anything!
