Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader, I will try to get it done quickly but thoroughly. Sometimes I will be slower than others, but it will never take an unreasonably long time. I expect you to actually ESTABLISH a DocX connection (it has happened before that the person I beta for REFUSES to establish the connection) and to let me know if you are not okay with scene alteration or perhaps the addition of small scenes, if I feel such a thing is advisable. I primarily do spelling and grammar, my main strengths, but I will check consistency and characterization as well. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm best as a proofreader - fixing spelling and grammar. I can tell if someone is OOC or if something doesn't quite click, or if something is inconsistent with canon or perhaps your own story as well, though. If I think something doesn't fit, but you need something that serves a specific purpose, I can go and research a similar object as well. In addition, if something doesn't quite fit and you want to make it so it does, I can usually come up with a good reason for something to happen as well. A cover story, if you will. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not great at catching minor story errors. But I mean minor, like the ones where it's hard to tell if it was done on purpose or on accident. I'm also not great about going back to reference with something earlier in the story, to check for self-contradictions, but I can usually check things anyway, and I have a relatively good memory for those things. I also have a tendency to miss words occasionally, as I read pretty fast. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I like adventurous stories best. I also like to read family themed stories, revelation fics, and DxS or DxE (not both in the same story!). I equally like to do kinda dark stories, but not too dark, like really scary. And, I'll do stories that really make like no sense, like the one I made, The Random Game. As in stories that really don't serve a purpose, have a theme, or anything that would make it fit into their world at all really. I'll do basically anything that I've actually read/watched/seen etc before, but I'm most confident with the ones I listed. Crossovers are my favorites, unless you twist it to make them already know each other. Obviously that does not apply if it is a sequel to a previous crossover. I also particularly enjoy Manipulative Dumbledore, Mentor Severus, and Good Voldemort/Time Travel/Dimension Travel stories. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I would prefer not to do slash or really dark fics, simply because no matter how much I enjoy them, I am completely incapable of writing them. I will never do major AU, as in, say, Danny as the Prince of another planet or Danny having been born as full ghost. No character death except for when it is one of those Danny-loses-everything stories. Meaning, I don't want Danny to die! I will generally not do anything involving OCs, but if someone comes up with a really good one I'll do it. Same goes for AUs. I also refuse point-blank to beta parodies. I don't like them. Never have, never will. No offense to all you people who write them, but I don't like my favorite characters being made fun of. I don't particularly enjoy Chaos Stories either. |
