Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Send me your story with the following; your name or alias, short summary of your story, what you most need my help with in writing. I'll do my magic beta magic after that point.I will add suggestions, put in questions, address problems in a different color than the rest of the text so it's noticeable - but it will be dark so it won't give you a migraine, trying to read bright yellow text, so keep a lookout. I will not notify you of small changes (like misspelling a word and me fixing it, you leaving out a word like "and", or forgetting/misusing punctuation) unless I'm confused as to what you mean. If you need help getting characters in character, I will help you, if you refuse to have characters in character because it's more fun to have Kenpachi (Bleach) act like a little girl, Orochimaru (Naruto) act like an average person, Ed (Full Metal Alchemist) accept that he's a midget, or Zoro (One Piece) be a part-time navigator (if this is for fun, fine, if he's good at it, no), just, no. I won't beta that. If you have an OC, they better be explained throughout the story, and they better not be a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu. I will find you, and I will hurt you, if you try to publish that idiotic stuff. If your chapter is less than 1,000 words, you better be very open to critique, because a chapter should have substance and I'm sorry, but not much can be communicated in 500 words. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good with grammar, I read a lot of novels (I actually don't read very much fanfiction at all unless it's a story I'm beta-ing) so I'm used to the kind of writing people who have been published. This also means I won't really put up with the errors that are common on this site (like, say, A/N in the middle of the story, character bashing, stupidity in general).I'm also good with syntax, past and present tense, and structuring paragraphs. I'm not a college major, but I'm passable. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I make mistakes, I might get caught up in something and leave an error in your writing. I know I'm expected to fix the mistakes you left in your writing, but I make mistakes too and I try not to, but if I get distracted or something's going on and I've got a deadline to get your story back to you then you know, stuff happens. I get most of the mistakes, but I recommend looking over the story quickly before you post it so you can fix whatever I left over, it shouldn't be much. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
IkkakuxYumichika is awesome. I love romance, I have nothing against yuri, yaoi, or het.I also love horror. Blood and gore, scientific apocalypse, psychological, whatever you got. Throw it at me. Well, not literally. You don't even know where I live, how are you going to throw stuff at me? But, figuratively, bring it on. I will read anything from T-M, and be it an adventure of the cutesy type, severe mutilation, or lemons. I'm not picky. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Please nothing too OOC. No exceptions, I hate it with a passion. I'll notify you to find another beta and I'll stick around for a minimum of two weeks, longer if I think you're sincerely having trouble finding a beta, but no promises.I also don't like OC character's playing major roles in stories (if they're only there to help the story along, like a bartender character, I can deal with it). If you want to make them a main character, whatever, I'll read it. I just would rather avoid reading about some Mary-Sue or Gary-Stu. If I think your character is Mary-Sue or whatever, I'll notify you to find another beta reader, and I'll beta for you until you can find another (I'll stick around for at least two weeks, but I won't ditch if I think you're honestly trying to find someone else to beta). I hate m-preg. If you must write it, I'll beta the story, as long as it's not too terribly written, because it's not the m-preg itself that I hate, it's the writers who normally suck and just can't write, and for some reason they're drawn to m-preg. |
