I am a part-time beta-reader. I can easily spot spelling and grammatical errors, although I am not strict about it. My rule: "If it sounds good enough, then it's good." I also like to look for loose ends and plot holes in the story.

Although I am not strict about grammar, I have good formal knowledge of grammatical rules in the English language. I can also detect loose ends, plot holes and other questionable bits in a story.

I tend to gloss over TL;DR paragraphs. I dislike descriptions that do not add value to the overall plot. I have a short attention span and, therefore, I'm more effective when I'm reviewing short stories. Unless, of course, the story is intensely interesting.

I would only beta-read "realistic" stories (i.e. mystery, drama, romance, but not magical fantasy, science fiction). If the stories involve supernatural beings such as talking animals, robots and fairies, they should act like humans with only minimal use of magic. I prefer to beta-read short stories over novels.

I do not like magical fantasies (e.g. Harry Potter) and science fiction (e.g. Star Wars). I will only beta-read fanfiction that fall under these categories if the fanfiction focused on the human aspect and not the supernatural.
