Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have workshopped writing in literary classes before, and like I did then, my critiques will always be aimed at the piece of literature I'm reading, not the author. My approach is largely that of someone who provides guidelines, not someone who directs. I'll advise on characterization for those that I recognize and know well, and the overall picture will be my general focus. I can provide nitty-gritty corrections on things like grammar, spelling etc., though that won't be my primary focus. I'll be honest with my ideas and remark upon flow of the story, and, upon request, I can concentrate on whatever aspect the author may prefer help with. br /br /br / br /br / br / As for my expectations of authors who ask for my help, I ask that they know in general where they'd like to take their story- I'm not opposed to being a sounding board, on the other hand, I don't intend to write any story for anyone who wants a beta. Mutual honesty, patience and basic decency are really all that I ask beyond that. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm skilled at recognizing what is or isn't in-character for characters of series that I enjoy, particularly with fan fiction I've read, and I'm only getting better. I can quickly recognize whether a line of dialog doesn't fit someone, or an action doesn't suit their personality. In that vein, I'm also pretty good at coming up with ideas for catalyst events that may drive characters to act differently or somewhat out-of-character. I can comment on flow pretty well, and know how to arrange events so they don't break flow of the narrative or conversation. I'm also very well versed in natural-sounding, punchy and succinct dialog, and how to avoid redundancy. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I will occasionally run into ideas I don't want to abandon or edit out, even if doing so would be more beneficial than not. I'm prone to losing interest and/or passion for something if I don't strike while the iron is hot, so to speak, and I have a tendency to prioritize my routines over making progress with a story or a work if I am severely stressed or otherwise distracted. Deadlines are something of a double-edged sword for me, as while it helps me to have goals I can mete out, I can get hyper-focused on the time constraint and thus lose perspective, and as a result my ability to improvise and have fun with the writing process suffers. br /br /br / br /br / br / I imagine I'm a bit of a pain to work with under those circumstances. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I have my comfort zones, same as anyone. Having not beta'd before, it'd be easier to say what I'd prefer not to beta. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not opposed to yaoi, but yaoi lemons can make me uncomfortable. I'm also not opposed to angst, provided it's done well. That said, I can only take so much of it at once, and anything in any genre that's truly overwrought is liable to lose my interest fast. |
