As a beta reader I will look over spelling, grammar, and the plot overall. I'd point out areas where I think the plot doesn't flow quite right or where a character doesn't quite seem like themselves. I'd like to be able to do this without changing the original story too much since it isn't mine and the author only wants some help.

I'm pretty good with spelling and grammar. I'm also fairly good at using different words so the story does not become too repetitive through the lack of perfectly nice synonyms.

Depending on the character that is being written for, I occasionally have trouble getting into the correct mindset and I can't always depict them correctly, so if all you need is help with characterization, someone else may be a better choice.

I would prefer stories that belong to fandoms which I enjoy. It makes it easier to look over what's written if I can actually like what's there instead of focusing on how little I know about the characters and things of that sort.

As far as genre goes, I don't suppose that I'm really very opposed to any one type of story, but if it is from a fandom that I do not enjoy or do not know, I would rather not look it over since it would either be rather confusing for me, or the author may not like the final result since I could not enjoy looking over the story.
