Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've beta'ed a bit over on the Fanfiction sister site, Fictionpress, and I've come to really enjoy it. I love to help other people and editing is one of my favorite things to do. If you decide to choose me as a beta reader for your story(s), I would hope that you'd be able to take my advice and listen to the ideas I give you. I've had authors before who chose me, and then when I gave them the criticisms they chose not to listen. My expectations are simple: be willing to learn, take (sometimes harsh) criticism, and at least have an average writing ability. If you're over the age of 15 and still write like a third grader, please seek help elsewhere. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strong points are detail, sentence structure, grammar, verb placement, etc. I love finding ways to elaborate on descriptions and I believe there is no end to the amount of detail with which you can saturate your writing. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
The only weakness I can think of is that I'm an amateur - but aren't we all? As an unpublished writer I think of myself as very talented but I may miss things while editing. That is why I usually tend to go over the work once, list my comments, and then go back a second or third time for accuracy. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer to read stories from the categories of Anime/Manga, Comics (particularly DC), Movies, TV Shows, and Books. Even though my listing for story ratings goes from K to M, I would prefer to read T and above based on the lack of censorship. Its not a particular preference, but I will read about yaoi, het, non-con, gore, etc. For sub-categories I will read nearly all of them, with the exceptions of those listed below. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Unfortunately I have to draw the line at Plays/Musicals because while I love listening to music, I don't know a thing about it and I fear my lack of/limited knowledge on the subject of Musicals would hinder the author rather than help them. Also, I would prefer not to read about yuri, Mary-Sues, or Mpregs. In fact, I certainly won't read them because they provide some of the most horrifying and vivid nightmares I've ever had. So, in order to retain my sanity I must decline all writers who would seek my assistance for those prospective genres. As far as sub-categories, and as I said, I will read most of the them except for Spiritual, Western, Family, and Poetry. And, for the love of God, please refrain from asking me to beta anything Harry Potter related. Thanks. |
