Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am a 21-year-old college student in Nebraska. I've been on fanfiction.net for 10 years now, so I've seen just about every kind of fanfic you could think of. I write only Harry Potter on here, though I've been an inactive author on this site for several years. I have some pieces up on various author's forums throughout the web, and I have many unpublished pieces of short fiction and higher-level "literary" stuff. I'm very picky about grammar, spelling, and especially using English correctly, to speak and behave in the way that the character normally would. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My specialty as a writer is narration over dialogue, but as I stated above, my strength lies in keeping the characters the same as the author created. Many people have a great story idea, but are too scared to put their own characters into it, which I understand. When you completely create a world, it leaves your entire imagination open to criticism. I have no problem coaching an author into creating their own world for a wonderful plotline. I've done it many times, having realized that my story doesn't HAVE to exist in the world of Harry Potter. If we decide together that your story belongs under originals on fictionpress.com or adultfanfiction.net or another site, don't worry; I won't abandon you. Once I start betaing a story, I will continue unless the author no longer needs my services. This is something I enjoy doing, so you won't have to worry about never hearing from me and needing to postpone your writing. I understand how frustrating it is, both as an author and a reader when there is a delay in the posting of new chapters and stories. I will be a very reliable source of help for your writings. It will be even better if I can work on more than one of your stories. In this way, I'll be able to get really in touch with your style of writing, so that we won't have to re-learn each other with every posting, the way you would using a different beta-reader for each and every story. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My main weakness is that sometimes I try too hard, resulting in frustration for me and an inability to get everything done that I want to do. To alleviate this problem, I promise all of my authors: I will take stories from no more than three (3) different authors at any given time. Any of these three authors may submit to me as many stories as they wish from their own writings, but will please choose one (1) priority story. This will keep my number of working projects low enough that I can devote as much time as is deserved to each story. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I would prefer to read stories based on books/movies/games I've experienced, just to keep the author's intent in mind while betaing. I mainly beta HP (all ships), Twilight, and Glee. I am very well versed in literature, however, so there are likely many other areas in which I could be of great assistance. Please feel free to just ask me, and I'll let you know if I feel capable of handling the subject matter.I am a massive Gleek, and have recently fallen head-over-heels for the whole Klaine thing. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I will not beta stories under three chapters OR 5000 words. If you have a two-chapter story that's 5000 words long, that's fine. I will also not beta a sequel unless I have betaed the original. I believe this causes a lack of knowledge of the original storyline, and may therefore lead to contradictions.br /br /br / br /br / br / Also, because this has been a problem lately: for the most part, I WILL NOT DO EXTREME AU STORIES. That means no HP without magic, no all-human Twilight. That's bull. Make up your own characters and call it an original story. With very few exceptions, I won't beta something so out of the world created by the author, but send me the request if you want; if it's an AMAZING plot, I might just take you up on it! |
