Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
If its good, I tell you so. If its bad, I tend to be absolutely blunt in telling you that, as well. I tend to read the chapter, fix immediate mistakes, then contemplate it for the rest of the day - making it easier for me to find canon errors, contradictions, and other things, but also making it a longer wait for the chapter to be returned. Usually, I can finish betaing and add commentary within two-three days, but there are always exceptions, of which I will try to inform you, but may not succeed.When requesting me as a beta, I must ask that you PM me and include the title of the story you want beta'd, exactly what you want me to check (i.e., grammar, spelling, general, canon, plot, characters, etc), and the duration of the projected project. I'd also appreciate it if you had samples of your work already posted on FF. I generaly appreciate it if you demonstrate that you've read a few of my own recent stories, as it shows that you are not randomly selecting the first person you see on the list of betas and actually want me - Rosie - as your editor, not just any and all editors. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm best at checking grammar, spelling, and style. I can put puzzles together as long as the pieces aren't scattered too widely; meaning that I can usually find plot holes, repetitivity, or contradictions in short stories. I have a relatively good grasp on spelling. I tend to use the most widely referred to romanized Japanese, such as 'chichiue', instead of some other versions I've seen, such as 'chichioya'. I also use Japanese forms of names, such as 'Kankurou' instead of 'Kankuro' (Naruto). |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I lack the ability to use a semicolon, so if you use one, I will most adamantly trust Microsoft Word's grammar check. If the story spans many, many chapters, I may not be able to find plot holes, contradictions, or canon errors. In fact, I may not be able to find canon errors at all, unless they are glaringly obvious. For example, I've only seen approximately a hundred episodes of Naruto, half in Chinese - which means no English translations at all for those. In addition, I've only read about fifteen volumes of the manga, and a few randomly generated chapters. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I enjoy romance and action, and I would prefer not to beta long projects. If you can finish it within a year or two, I'm fine with it, but anything longer than that and I'm afraid that I might not be very consistent. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I dislike self-insertions, Mary Sues, yaoi, and yuri. There are certain pairings that I cannot agree with, and I would find it very difficult ot be completely unbiased while editing those. I classify a Mary Sue very loosely as using an original character as one of the main characters, unless it is excellently written. For examples, read "A Mary Sue Alphabet." Also, I refuse to beta PWPs. |
