Outside of grammar and punctuation, which I will most willingly edit, I prefer to make suggestions on general improvements. For most people, writing is very personal, so I won't typically go in-depth unless asked. If asked, I will edit your story six ways to Sunday- with the understanding that there will be no crying about the results! If you want your story to get a good working over, you must have a thick skin.

If I were to have a Beta name, it would be "The Condenser" because I condense things. A friend read an essay I wrote once and said, "Reading one of your essays is like getting hit over the head by a brick," meaning, of course, that I get right down to the point and cut the fluff, or extra words. For example, I see the phrase, "It seemed as if..." quite often. My opinion is, cut the crap and write "it was" or "it wasn't". I also agree with Mark Twain who said, "Every time you are inclined to use the word 'very', substitute the word 'damn'. Your editor will delete it and the writing will be as it should be." In my opinion, the same goes for words such as "really" or similar.

I'm a fair hand at grammar and punctuation. Also, I can help make dialogue for period pieces (Jane Austen fics, etc) sound more authentic. I'm good at making dialogue sound natural.

I'm an American, so one of my weaknesses is British-isms, i.e. using flat instead of apartment, biscuit instead of cookie and etc, however, I'm not entirely inept at picking them out. I just won't get all of them.

Prose, definitely, but I will take a look at poetry even if it's not my favorite. I also prefer comedy, parody and romance, but I don't mind other genres.
