Though I am new to betareading fan fiction, I have been editing my friend's original stories for many years. I also have a BA in English which I hope somewhat qualifies me when it comes to literature. My style in betareading is to correct grammar and put suggestions or comments in parentheses, giving my overall impression in a final paragraph. If English is not your first language or for some other reason you find it difficult to create well-formed sentences I would also be happy to re-word your work to make it sound less foreign. Otherwise, I will make suggestions but try to leave your writing style as you wrote it.

I will also mention that, while I'm not extensively busy just now, I do have a lot of mini projects I like to do in my spare time. I am currently working on three different fanfiction stories (I work best in spurts, switching between them when my excitement for a story starts to slow) as well as any number of original stories which I hope to one day get published. Added to this i study, work, and otherwise spend my time on activities that take me far from my computer. But I will make every attempt to get back to people with their stories within a reasonable amount of time, hopefully within a day or two, a week at the very most (unless it is really really long or needs a lot of re-wording.)

My strengths are in in character and scene development, reworking awkward English into cohesive sentences, and basic grammar. I can help with plot, poor wording, and, if asked, offer suggestions when writer's block gets in the way. I can also point out basic literary flaws as well as your story's strengths.

I will admit that thorough research is not something I'm fond of. I can beta from an American background with some European experience (I spent a year of college in France and traveled around a bit from there), but I have little interest in checking up on details outside of my experience. So if you write about, for instance, a hospital scene I could help reword it but I wouldn't know if medical details were wrong. I also would probably not be the best choice when it comes to fixing sex scenes.

I prefer to beta stories within fandoms that I am familiar with. If I am not familiar with a fandom, I cannot make informed comments or suggestions concerning whether someone is out of character or if certain aspects depart from canon. Within those fandoms I do know, I prefer stories that center around the main characters (for instance, Harry Potter stories that center on Harry). My favorites tend towards hurt comfort or mentor stories. I like romance when the plot does not solely rely upon the romance. I have no problem with slash (or het, or gen for that matter). Though I'm willing to look over works outside my preferences, here is a list of what I like to read best:
Harry Potter- stories that take place during Harry's stay at Hogwarts (not involving time travel to when his parents were alive) and that center upon Harry himself.
Stargate SG1-Stories that center on Daniel and Jack (or if Jack is not there to at least have Daniel).
Lord of the Rings- Currently Legolas is my favorite character, but anything centering on members of the fellowship is fine Star Wars- I rather like reading about Obiwan and Quigon's years before the Phantom Menace, but I haven't actually read any of the books so my knowledge of canon rests solely upon the movies Psych- One of my newest favorite fandoms; I like stories involving Shawn. My favorite pairing is currently Shawn/Lassiter (not that I don't like Juliet...just not so much in a pairing.)
Batman- I prefer stories that center around Dick. I have not, however, read any of the comics or watched the cartoons. My background in batman lies solely in the movies and somewhat from fanfiction. So while I can read for content I can't correct it to make the story more canon.
Pirates of the Caribbean-I prefer the stories that center on Will, if possible with Jack also playing a large role (he is the making of the movies; without his character I doubt they would have been nearly as successful) but really I'd be fine with just about anything.

I prefer not to beta stories that center primarily around sex. I don't mind if sex is present in the story, but not when it overpowers the plot (aside from any other reason, I doubt I'd be much help as a beta in this area anyway)
