The King: Xisuthros I, known as the false king, is charismatic and tyrannical in equal measures. He's very difficult to dislike face-to-face, no matter how much blood you know he has on his hands and lips. He has ruled Illea for a hundred years, and to all appearances intends to rule it for a hundred more. He has held seven Selections over the course of his rule, and in each case the girls are never seen again - only the queen survives.

The Queen: Visharani, the seventh of Xisuthros' seven queens, the only survivor of her Selection and rarely glimpsed - even compared to her secretive husband, she is reclusive. Beautiful and undoubtedly powerful, she is stepmother to the crown prince and generally regarded by the populace as the king's consigliere and confidant, perhaps even more deadly than he.

The Crown Prince: Calau, the king's only son and heir. Twenty years old and even more handsome than his parents, he is the face of the dynasty, relaying his father's orders to the populace and making visits on his behalf - but even he is aloof, and it is impossible to know what lies beneath the mask. It is his Selection that has just been announced, prompting speculation he may soon ascend to the throne.
