Before the death of Lily and James Potter, Lily made a request to Dumbledore. She made the request that if Sirius Black could not raise Harry, Severus Snape would be the one that she would trust to take care of her only son. Severus is absolutely baffled and at first wants to reject the child but perhaps through life and his love for Lily, he can protect Harry Potter.
