Author has written 13 stories for StarTrek: The Next Generation, StarTrek: The Original Series, Avengers, and Supernatural. A flash of bright light tore my eyes from the dull screen of my iPod. I glanced at the window for a moment, wondering what had distracted me from my messages. I saw nothing but the clear night sky, so I resumed my mindless communications, itching a mosquito bite underneath my Spiderman pajamas. The light shone again. I stared at the window, mildly interested in what was obviously not a figment of my imagination. Flashes of brightness appeared again. Confused, I pulled out my earbuds and got up reluctantly to turn off my noisy fan. I stood at the window and listened intently, but heard no thunder or obnoxious firework bangs. I opened the window and stuck my head out to look around. It wasn't raining, and the clouds were scarce and harmless. The light flashed, but the source was behind the roof. I craned my neck and leaned farther out the window, but wasn't able to see anything strange. Vaguely disappointed, I pulled my head back in and closed the window. Then I shuffled back to my bed and sprawled across it carelessly. I reached for my iPod and opened Messenger again. I casually asked a couple of friends if they had seen any lightning tonight, but got only negative responses. The flashes continued their taunt. I glared at them, questioning their presence; but their only response was to persist frustratingly. I wondered if there was something unnatural out there making those flashes. I let out a small groan and turned over to lay on my back, feeling ridiculous. A mere unfamiliar light had me all fired up and prepared to accept the wildest of explanations. Grabbing my iPod, I began scrolling through more messages without comprehending them. My gaze kept shifting to the window involuntarily. The flashes appeared to be fading. That thought triggered a strange reaction in my mind, making me get out of bed and head downstairs as quickly as possible. I sneaked past my parent's bedroom as stealthily as I could manage and reached the front door. Our black cat, Bagheera, rubbed against my leg as I unlocked the door. I held the door open to offer him his nightly prowl, but when he decided to stall in the doorway I just stepped outside without him and let the door swing shut behind me. I walked a couple steps forward as if in a trance, and then I sprinted up the slope of our front yard into the still night. Turning back to look at the house, I noticed that the sky was much lighter right above my house than anywhere else in the velvet sky. I waited a second and was rewarded with a small flash. The sky turned a pale purple where the lightning was coming from, and made it possible to see more clearly for a fraction of a second. I blinked and rubbed my eyes tiredly. My mind was a bit muddled from the late hour, but for a second I had seen a faint outline of something in the sky. Although nothing specific, I had definitely noticed a large shape in the single group of clouds that seemed to gather above my house. My heart raced as I stood by the street, staring at the cluster unwaveringly. Instantly, blinding light emanated from the clouds. I shielded my eyes instinctively, but kept squinting to try and locate the object again. As the light faded rapidly, my eyes widened. For the briefest moment, I had seen the shape in the clouds.
